ULTIMATE Green Bean Casserole with Bacon

This is the ultimate Green Bean Casserole recipe made with fresh green beans and crispy bacon! Adding a little Parmesan Cheese gives this classic casserole dish extra flavor. It’s easy to make, creamy, crunchy and so delicious!

Looking for a recipe for ultimate green bean casserole? You found it!

Thanksgiving is coming up quickly and I am already starting to plan my big dinner menu. I know, I know, it’s early! But Thanksgiving is so important to me and my family and I try to plan ahead to make the big day easy, enjoyable and yummy! Of course, my garlic roasted turkey will always be the main attraction on our Thanksgiving table, along with some of my family’s favorite side dishes.

ultimate green bean casserole

I like to serve classic side dishes at Thanksgiving like mashed potato casserole and perfectly cooked turkey gravy. I also like to play around with my family’s favorite, traditional sides and make them a little more modern. My bacon green bean casserole is the perfect example!

green bean casserole recipe

Green bean casserole is a Thanksgiving staple but adding crispy, juicy bacon to the dish makes it exciting and fresh. The smoky taste of the bacon goes so well with the flavor of the green beans that you are sure to be serving everyone seconds (and maybe thirds!). I guarantee, this green bean casserole recipe will be a big hit at your Thanksgiving dinner table this year!

Ingredients for Green Bean Casserole Recipe

My green bean casserole recipe uses a lot of the traditional ingredients. Grab that can on Campbell’s Cream of Mushroom soup because you can’t make a green bean casserole without it! Here is what else you will need:

  • fresh green beans– I always start with fresh green beans rather than frozen or canned. They are more crispy and flavorful.
  • salt and pepper – A little salt enhances the flavor of the whole dish. Don’t skip the salt! And pepper adds a subtle bite of heat that is delicious.
  • cream of mushroom soup– Cream of mushroom soup is the classic green bean casserole “sauce”. It has an earthy, decadent flavor like no other and it helps make this dish so easy. Just open the can, pour it in and the whole recipe is almost complete!
  • milk– A little milk helps thin the cream of mushroom soup, keeping it creamy and rich but not super thick.
  • bacon– I like to use thick cut bacon so there are nice, big pieces of bacon throughout the dish. Maple bacon and apple smoked bacon are fantastic as well and will add a whole new dimension to your dish.
  • garlic– Garlic just makes everything better, this green bean casserole included
  • fried onions– I use classic fried onions as the casserole topping. They add a nice crunchy texture and have a salty, sweet taste that is unbeatable.
  • Parmesan cheese– A sprinkle of parmesan cheese is the perfect finishing touch to the dish.

In addition to all these tasty ingredients, you will need a 3 quart baking dish, a large pot, a large bowl, a large spoon and, of course, an oven! Move that roasting turkey over to make space in your oven for this green bean casserole- it is just as important!

Preparing Thanksgiving dinner can be complicated so adding anything easy (but tasty!) recipes are always a good idea. Luckily, my green bean casserole with bacon recipe is pretty simple. Here is what you need to do:

2. Boil the green beans in water for 5 minutes then, drain the hot water immediately and rinse the cooked green beans in cold water to stop them from cooking. You don’t want soggy green beans!

Frequently Asked Questions, Storage and Substitutions

recipe for green bean casserole

How do I store leftover Green Bean Casserole?

Wrap your baking dish tightly with plastic wrap or aluminum foil, or transfer leftovers to an airtight container, and store in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. The topping will get soggy over time so I recommend adding additional fried onions when reheating.

Can I make Green Bean Casserole in advance?

Yes, Green Bean Casserole can be made up to 3 days in advance and stored in the refrigerator. Store the Parmesan cheese and the reserved fried onions and bacon (for the topping) separately. Allow the casserole to sit at room temperature for 30 minutes before placing in the oven.

Can I make Green Bean Casserole in the slow cooker?

Yes, mix all of the casserole ingredients, except for the fried onions, in your slow cooker. Cook on low heat for 6 hours. Add the fried onions when serving.

Ingredient Substitutions:

milk – For an extra rich casserole, use half and half in place of the milk.

green beans – 4 cans of green beans (drained) can be used in place of fresh. Frozen green beans will also work, and they do not need to be pre-cooked. Using canned or frozen green beans will alter the texture of the casserole.

Cream of mushroom soup – If using a low sodium cream of mushroom soup then you may want to add ¼ teaspoon of salt to the soup mixture. If you are not a fan of mushrooms, then you can use cream of chicken or cream of celery soup instead.

garlic cloves – ½ teaspoon garlic powder can be used instead of fresh garlic if you prefer.

Parmesan cheese – Asiago or Romano cheese can be used, or for a different flavor try shredded Cheddar cheese.

Yum, I can’t wait for Thanksgiving. It is hard to believe that it is about a month away too. I’m not ready yet but it’s coming sooner than later. I’m thinking on cooking a whole chicken in my crockpot; instead, of a big turkey since it is just the two of us.
