This easy, no bake Oreo dirt cake recipe is the perfect treat to cool down the hot summer day, or to serve at your next potluck or BBQ! Made with crushed Oreos layered between white chocolate pudding and cream cheese mixture, it’s truly a classic summer treat to have around!
We’re a big dessert family but in the summer when it’s sizzling hot, the idea of turning on the oven doesn’t sound like a good idea. The summer heat isn’t going to stop me from making homemade desserts, though. So, I just turn to my favorite no-bake dessert recipes instead.
I can remember eating dirt cake at birthday parties as a kid and I started making my own dirt cakes when I was old enough to measure the ingredients. I have been tweaking this recipe for years! I finally think that it is perfect enough to share with everyone so you, too, can enjoy this amazing, easy no bake dessert all summer long.
My make ahead recipe is great for kids parties, cookouts or just to serve on a Friday night after a long week at work. A big bowl of Oreo Dirt Cake is always a good idea!
Ingredients for Oreo Dirt Cake
There are many ways to make a dirt cake and many different ingredients you can use. From different brands of pudding to alternate milks, you can really tweak this recipe in many ways. I happen to think it is perfect exactly as written but you will need to test it out for yourself! Here are the ingredients you will need:
- OREO cookies– Oreo cookie crumbs are the “dirt” in the dirt cake. They are dark and sweet and actually look like dirt. You can sometimes find cookie crumbs in the grocery store, already ground and ready to use. These will work great! But a pack of oreos pulsed in the food processor will also work.
- butter and cream cheese– Melted butter is blended into the Oreo crumbs to make a pie crust. It is very similar to a graham cracker crust but totally chocolatey. A little cream cheese makes the filling creamy and rich. It also helps stabilize the filling, making it hold its shape when cut.
- powdered sugar-A little powdered sugar softens the cream cheese and also makes the filling super sweet. This is a dessert after all, it needs to be sweet!
- instant white chocolate Pudding– I love using white chocolate pudding to make dirt cake. The bright white color looks great next to the dark Oreo crumbs. It is also a sweet, flavorful pudding that really screams of summer.
- instant vanilla pudding mix– Instant vanilla pudding mix is another great option. It contributes to the overall flavor balance and texture of the dessert, achieving a creamy consistency and sweetness.
- french vanilla pudding– French vanilla pudding is a popular choice for its creamy texture and enhanced flavor, making it perfect for no-bake desserts like Oreo Dirt Cake.
- milk– I use whole milk to make the pudding since it gives the pudding a rich taste and texture. You can use other types of milk but they won’t be nearly as decadent as whole milk. I have had success with oat milk and it tasted good but not as great as whole milk can be.
- whipped topping– Whipped topping is folded into the pudding and cream cheese mix, lightening the filling and making it fluffy and easy to slice.
You will need a few different kitchen tools to make this dirt cake recipe. A food processor and small bowl are needed to mix the Oreo cookie crust. Two large bowls, a hand mixer and a rubber spatula are needed to make the filling. But I bet you already have all of these things in your kitchen ready to go!
How to Make Oreo Dirt Cake
For the Crust:
1. Add cookies to food processor and crush to fine crumbs.
2. Reserve about 1 cup of crumbs and add the remaining crumbs to a large bowl.
3. Melt butter in microwave safe bowl.
4. Combine melted butter and crumbs to form a crust.
5. Press cookie mixture into 13×9 baking dish.
6. Place in refrigerator to chill while making filling.
For the Filling:
1. In a large bowl, combine pudding and milk until completely smooth.
2. Place in refrigerator 10-15 minutes or until set.
3. In another large bowl, beat cream cheese until smooth and creamy, then add the powdered sugar and beat until well combined.
4. Fold in whipped topping.
5. Remove the pudding from refrigerator and fold into cream cheese mixture.
Assembling the Dirt Cake
Assembling the dirt cake is a straightforward process that requires some patience and attention to detail. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you assemble the perfect dirt cake:
- Prepare the crust: Start by preparing the crust according to the recipe instructions. Make sure it’s evenly spread and pressed into the bottom of the 9×13 inch pan. This will be the foundation of your dirt cake, so take your time to get it right.
- Layer the pudding mixture: Next, layer the pudding mixture over the crust. Make sure to spread it evenly and smooth out any air pockets. This will ensure that each bite of your dirt cake has a consistent texture and flavor.
- Add the cream cheese mixture: Add the cream cheese mixture on top of the pudding layer. Spread it evenly and make sure to cover the entire surface. The cream cheese mixture adds a rich and creamy element to the dirt cake, making it irresistible.
- Add the crushed Oreos: Sprinkle the crushed Oreos over the cream cheese mixture. You can use as much or as little as you like, depending on your desired level of “dirtiness.” The crushed Oreos not only add to the visual appeal but also provide a delightful crunch.
- Repeat the layers: Repeat the layers one more time, starting with the pudding mixture, then the cream cheese mixture, and finally the crushed Oreos. This will create a multi-layered dessert that looks impressive and tastes delicious.
- Top with gummy worms: Finish off the dirt cake by topping it with gummy worms. You can arrange them in a pattern or simply sprinkle them over the top. The gummy worms add a fun and whimsical touch, making this dessert a hit with kids and adults alike.
Tips and Tricks for Making Oreo Dirt Cake
I have made this Oreo dirt cake so many times and have figured out a few little tips and tricks that really help the recipe turn out perfectly. Take a look at these before you start mixing so you can really get a good idea about how to make the cake.
- Chill overnight– The cake is ready to eat the moment the recipe is done but it really benefits from sitting in the fridge overnight. This will allow the pudding filling to set up and get firm enough to slice.
- Add gummy worms– Gummy worms coming out of a dirt cake is pure fun. I have even found gummy bugs in the past that can go on top of the Oreo cake. Make this dessert whimsical and exciting!
- Change up the pudding– I have made this recipe with all different types of pudding. Vanilla, banana, chocolate and even mint pudding all work well. Just keep in mind that the color will change with the flavor!
- Soften the cream cheese– It will blend in so much better and be super smooth when soft. You don’t want any chunky cream cheese pieces in your Oreo dirt cake!
- Use instant vanilla pudding mix– For a creamy consistency, try using instant vanilla pudding mix. It blends well and adds a smooth texture to the cake.
Now, on to my favorite tips- presentation!
Variations and Add-ins
The beauty of the Oreo dirt cake recipe is that it’s highly customizable. Here are some variations and add-ins you can try to make your dirt cake truly unique:
- Chocolate pudding: Use chocolate pudding instead of vanilla for a different flavor profile. The rich chocolate flavor pairs perfectly with the Oreo crumbs and cream cheese mixture.
- Nuts or sprinkles: Add some chopped nuts or sprinkles to the crushed Oreos for extra texture and color. This can add a delightful crunch and make the dirt cake even more visually appealing.
- Fresh fruit: Mix in some fresh fruit, such as raspberries or blueberries, into the cream cheese mixture for a sweet and tangy twist. The fruit adds a burst of freshness that complements the creamy layers.
- Candy pieces: Add some chopped candy pieces, such as M&M’s or chopped peanut butter cups, to the crushed Oreos for an extra burst of flavor. This can make the dirt cake even more indulgent and fun.
- Cookie crumbs: Use different types of cookie crumbs, such as chocolate sandwich cookies or peanut butter cookies, to create a unique flavor combination. This allows you to experiment with different tastes and textures.
- Whipped cream: Top the dirt cake with whipped cream instead of Cool Whip for a lighter and fluffier texture. Whipped cream can add a delicate touch to the dessert, making it feel even more special.
- Caramel sauce: Drizzle some caramel sauce over the top of the dirt cake for a sweet and salty flavor combination. The caramel adds a luxurious element that pairs wonderfully with the other ingredients.
- Trifle dish: For an elegant presentation, consider serving your dirt cake in a trifle dish. The layers of the dessert will be beautifully displayed, making it perfect for special occasions.
These are just a few ideas to get you started. Feel free to experiment and come up with your own unique variations and add-ins to make your Oreo dirt cake recipe truly special. The possibilities are endless, and each variation can bring a new and exciting twist to this classic no-bake dessert.
Decorating Dirt Pudding
One of the best parts about making an Oreo dirt cake is getting creative with the decorations! This fun dirt cake recipe is perfect for adding whimsical touches that will delight both kids and adults. Here are some ideas to make your dirt cake stand out:
- Gummy Worms: Classic and always a hit, gummy worms are a must-have for any dirt cake. Arrange them crawling out of the “dirt” for a playful and realistic effect. You can even mix in some gummy bugs for extra fun!
- Edible Flowers: For a more elegant touch, consider adding edible flowers to your dirt cake. Flowers like pansies, violets, and marigolds are not only beautiful but also safe to eat. They add a pop of color and a touch of sophistication to your dessert.
- Themed Cake Toppers: Depending on the occasion, you can use themed cake toppers to decorate your dirt cake. For a birthday party, add mini toy trucks or dinosaurs. For a garden party, use little garden tools or fairy figurines. The possibilities are endless and can make your dirt cake the centerpiece of your event.
Get creative with your dirt cake by adding gummy worms, edible flowers, or themed cake toppers to make it a fun and festive dessert!
How to Serve Oreo Dirt Cake
I typically make my dirt cake in a 9×13 pan just like in the recipe. However, you can make dirt cake in almost anything!
Here are a few of my favorite “vessels” for dirt cake:
- Layer the cake into a trifle dish. The clear sides enable you to see the pretty layers of the cake and it makes this simple, fun cake look fancy. Stick some gummy worms on the sides of the glass dish for some extra fun!
- Put the dirt cake in mini plastic beach buckets. Kids will love using a small shovel to dig in the “dirt”. Just be sure to use new, clean buckets and pails!
- Use small plastic cups to make individual dirt cake cups. Guests at your party can grab a cup and easily eat the cake without you ever needing to slice and serve.
- Another fun option is to make dirt cake cups. These nostalgic desserts combine layers of creamy chocolate pudding and crushed Oreo cookies, often topped with gummy worms. They are perfect for both children and adults.
No matter how you serve your dirt cake creation, be sure to make it in advance, get it checked off your to-do list and allow the cake to set up overnight. That brings me to my next point…
Serving Variations
The versatility of this Oreo dirt cake recipe means you can serve it in various ways to suit different occasions. Here are some serving ideas to inspire you:
- Individual Dirt Cake Cups: Perfect for parties or gatherings, individual dirt cake cups are a convenient and fun way to serve this dessert. Simply layer the pudding mixture, cream cheese mixture, and crushed Oreos in small plastic cups. Top each cup with a gummy worm for a cute and easy-to-eat treat.
- Trifle Dish: For a more elegant presentation, layer your dirt cake in a trifle dish. The clear sides of the dish will showcase the beautiful layers of pudding, cream cheese mixture, and Oreo crumbs. This sophisticated look is perfect for more formal events or dinner parties.
- Mini Beach Buckets: For a playful and unique presentation, serve your dirt cake in mini plastic beach buckets. Kids will love using a small shovel to dig into the “dirt.” Just make sure to use new, clean buckets and pails for serving.
- Cake Pops: Another fun option is to make dirt cake pops. Form the cake mixture into small balls, insert a stick, and dip them in melted chocolate. Roll them in crushed Oreos to create a dirt-like coating. These bite-sized treats are perfect for kids’ parties and make for easy, mess-free eating.
No matter how you choose to serve your Oreo dirt cake, these variations will add a special touch to your dessert and make it a memorable part of any celebration.
Consider serving your dirt cake in individual cups for a party, or layer it in a trifle dish for a more elegant presentation.
Storage and Freezing Oreo Dirt Cake
Leftover Oreo Dirt Cake can be stored in the fridge for up to 5 days. You can also wrap the cake tightly in an airtight container and freeze it for up to a month. When you are ready to enjoy your dirt cake, just tahw it in the fridge overnight and it will be as good as new! This no bake dessert is incredibly convenient to store and freeze.
