October is also National Pizza Month and to celebrate, I’m so glad I could bring you this easy, homemade pizza recipe!
Are you enjoying the beautiful, cool and crisp Fall weather where you are? I know I do! I just love, love, love the changing colors of the leaves in Virginia at this time of year! 🙂
You know, with every changing season, I always find myself wanting to try new recipes too. It just feels like when the weather shifts, the foods I am feeding my family should also get a seasonal make over. This past weekend, I dedicated some time to spend in the kitchen, testing out new recipes that I felt would be perfect for the fall season, like my Pumpkin Ground Beef Casserole and my Caramel Crunch Pumpkin Ice Cream recipes that my whole family love.
I really wanted to try my hand at making a skillet pizza too, which I had read about in the past and always seemed like a fun and pretty easy dinner.
Let me just say that the skillet pizza I made was a complete winner in my house! Both my kids and my husband loved it and I had a great time making it too! It is definitely something I will be making all season long (and probably into the winter too….and in the spring…and probably next summer.)
HOW TO MAKE EASY HOMEMADE CAST IRON SKILLET PIZZA
The trick to making this easy homemade cast iron skillet pizza is definitely in the skillet (that is why it’s called skillet pizza after all!). You need a skillet that is oven safe and also fairly big- you want to be able to make a nice sized pizza. Cast iron skillets are my favorite for using in the oven. They are nice and heavy, easy to clean and they last forever. When shopping for a cast iron skillet, look for one that is pre-seasoned. This means it has already been coated in oil and will be ready to use straight out of the box. A 12 inch skillet is a good size for skillet pizza as it is not too big to handle and it makes a pizza large enough to share.
To make the pizza, I started out by making a simple crust for the pizza. While most pizza dough recipes are made with yeast and take hours to mix, rise and wait for them to be ready, I went with a much easier version of pizza crust. Flour, water, salt, baking powder and olive oil is all you need! All the ingredients are mixed into a soft dough and then then dough is rolled into a circle the size of the skillet. The skillet is preheated in a hot oven, sprinkled with cornmeal and then the dough is place inside while the skillet is super hot. This helps immediately cook the dough, giving it a crispy exterior with a soft center- just like a pizza crust should be!
After the pizza crust is par-baked inside the skillet, it is brushed with some olive oil, covered in pizza sauce and topped with mozzarella cheese. Feel free to add any of your favorite pizza toppings at this point too. I actually put some pepperoni on half of the pizza and left the other half plain with just cheese. This way, everyone in my family got the toppings they wanted!
The pizza finishes baking inside the skillet and then, it is ready to serve. Be careful though- that cheese comes out of the oven hot!
With a recipe this simple, it is easy to say yes! I can already tell that we will be enjoying this pizza all fall in all different forms (I’m thinking of topping it with some roasted butternut squash and arugula one day, maybe some crumbled sausage under the cheese a different day.. and possibly a veggie loaded version too).
Get out your skillet and give this recipe a try and I know you will fall in love with this homemade skillet pizza too. No need to order take out any more when you have this quick pizza to make at home!
Let me know what you think and what kinds of pizzas you put together- I love to get new ideas on how to keep this recipe fresh and exciting all season long. Enjoy!
