Skip the Spa with These 3 DIY Face Masks

Need a good facial? Skip the spa and try these 3 DIY face masks that you can make with just a few, inexpensive items you already have in your kitchen!

There is nothing quite as indulgent as treating your skin to a soothing face mask, but a trip to the spa can be time consuming and costly. And with the current situation on the global pandemic, most beauty spas and salons still remain closed for business.

Fortunately, there are wonderful DIY face mask recipes that can be made with just a few, inexpensive, common items you probably already have in your kitchen.  The best part is these recipes are natural and do not contain preservatives, harsh chemicals, or other potentially irritating ingredients found in many commercial products.  Making your own face mask is remarkably easy.  Seriously, if you can make a sandwich, you can make your own face mask.

Before you start, try to carve out 30 minutes of uninterrupted time for yourself.  This is not critical, but taking time to lay back and relax while your mask is applied adds to the pampered feeling.  Try adding some relaxing in the tub with some soft music and a candle for a pleasing, multi-sensory experience. Before you apply any mask, make sure to start with a clean face, and if you have long hair, you may want to tie it back.

1. Honey Oatmeal Face Mask

This simple mask addresses so many skin concerns.  Oatmeal is soothing and moisturizing, while nourishing honey contains natural anti-fungal and anti-microbial benefits.  The optional addition of lemon can help fight blackheads, fade age spots, and reduce an overabundance of oil.

Ingredients

3 tablespoons ground oats (you can grind rolled oats in a blender or food processor. TIP: grind a cup or two at a time and store in an airtight container to have them ready to go at any time.)

2 tablespoons of honey

1 tablespoon of hot water

1/2 tablespoon of lemon juice (optional)

Mix the oatmeal and water to a paste-like consistency.  Add the honey and optional lemon juice and mix well.  Apply to clean skin, avoiding the mouth and eyes, and leave on for 15 minutes.  Rinse with warm water.  Use this mask 1-2 times a week.

2. Yogurt and Turmeric Face Mask

This mask has an impressive set of benefits.  Yogurt contains lactic acid, which is an alpha hydroxy acid, that gently exfoliates and dissolves dead skin cells.  Turmeric is a natural anti-inflammatory and skin brightener.  The honey and lemon juice are anti-microbials that contain beneficial antioxidants. Be sure to protect your clothing, as the turmeric can stain.

Ingredients

1/2 cup plain yogurt

1/8  teaspoon turmeric

1 teaspoon honey

1/2 teaspoon lemon juice

Combine all ingredients in a small bowl.  Apply to clean skin, avoiding the mouth and eyes, and leave on for 20 minutes.  Rinse with warm water.  This mask can be used once a week.

3. Egg White Face Mask

This pore reducing mask is great for tightening and toning the skin.  Egg whites also contain lysozyme, which is an enzyme known to destroy acne-causing bacteria by digesting their cellular walls.  Avoid this mask if you have dry skin.

Ingredients

1 egg white

1 teaspoon lemon juice

½ teaspoon honey

Mix the egg white and lemon juice until frothy.  Add the honey and stir well.  Apply to clean skin, avoiding the mouth and eyes, and leave on for 15-20 minutes.  Rinse with warm water.  This mask can be used once a week.

If you have sensitive skin, be sure to do a skin patch test first before using these natural skincare face masks. Or if you have any concerns at all, check with your dermatologist.

So, what do you think of these natural DIY face masks? Have you tried these or any similar DIY beauty recipes before? Tell me about it in the comments.

I need to plan a DIY spa day at home next time my daughter is off. I’d love to try the oatmeal and honey mask. I’ve heard it works great if you have acne. Thanks to mask wearing I tend to get more break outs now. Maskne is annoying but there are plenty of options to try to prevent it.

Yeah. When I go to the spa it’s typically just for a massage, and honestly, I don’t really go to SPAS per say, I go to those hole in the wall places, ha ha ha! Spas are overrated IMO… Especially when you can easily do face masks like this!
