This recipe uses thyme, rosemary, parsley, oregano, and sage — your whole kitchen will smell like Thanksgiving the second they hit the pan.

Rustic bread gives a perfect texture

Helpful Tools for This Recipe

Before you start mixing and baking, having the right kitchen tools on hand makes preparing this Thanksgiving Dressing even easier. These are the exact items I use in my own kitchen, and they help ensure the recipe comes together smoothly — especially during the busy holiday season.

2.5 qt Baking Dish
The perfect size for this dressing. It bakes evenly, keeps the center moist, and gives you that golden, crispy top everyone loves.

Large Nonstick Skillet
Ideal for sautéing the onions, celery, herbs, and sweet potatoes without sticking or burning. A reliable skillet is a must for building the flavor base.

✔ Wooden Spoon or Silicone Spatula
Great for gently folding the bread with the vegetable mixture so the cubes don’t get crushed.

Bread Knife
Essential for cutting through rustic loaves. It helps create clean, even cubes that hold up well during baking.

Mixing Bowl Set
You’ll want a couple of large bowls — one for combining the dressing and another for ingredients like the cranberries or egg mixture.

Fresh Herb Stripper & Chopper
A simple tool that makes prepping fresh herbs quick and easy, especially for a recipe loaded with thyme, sage, rosemary, and parsley.

✔ Low-Sodium Turkey Broth or Chicken Broth
Using low-sodium broth gives you more control over seasoning and keeps the dressing perfectly moist without overpowering the fresh herb flavors.

These tools not only make cooking more enjoyable, but they also help your Thanksgiving recipes turn out beautifully every time. If you’re stocking up for holiday cooking, this is the perfect time to refresh your kitchen essentials!

Add 1–2 cups of broth, enough to moisten but not drench the bread. Toss gently to avoid breaking the cubes.

Grease a baking dish with 1 tablespoon of butter. Spoon in the dressing.

Bake uncovered for 30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown.

Check the center:

If it looks dry, add a splash more broth and bake an additional 5–10 minutes.

Expert Tips for the Best Thanksgiving Dressing

Use rustic bread

Soft sandwich bread becomes mushy — rustic bread keeps its structure.

Let the bread dry out

Leaving it out for a few hours gives a better texture.

Don’t skip the fresh herbs

These are key to the Thanksgiving flavor.

Add broth gradually

You want it moist, not soggy.

Make ahead

Prepare everything (except the broth) 1 day ahead. This make-ahead feature not only saves you time on the day of the feast but also allows the flavors to meld, resulting in a more delicious dish. Add broth and bake before serving.

Skip plumping cranberries if short on time

They’ll rehydrate in the oven.

Can I make this ahead and freeze it?

Yes — but freeze it before adding broth. Add broth after thawing and bake as usual.

½ cup chopped parsley

1 to 2 cups chicken or turkey broth, low-sodium

  1. Heat oven to 375 degrees.
  2. Place dried cranberries in a small bowl and cover them with just enough water. Microwave for 45 seconds. Set aside to allow the cranberries to plump.

  6. Beat with a fork until well mixed. Set aside.
  7. Add the cooked vegetables, egg mixture, drained cranberries, walnuts, parsley, and cubed bread into a large bowl. Mix to combine.

  9. Grease a baking dish with the remaining one tablespoon of butter and spoon the dressing in.
  10. Bake, uncovered, for 30 minutes, or until the top begins to brown. Remove a spoonful from the center to make sure the interior is moist. If not, add more broth and return the dish to the oven for 5-10 minutes.
