21 Fun and Easy End-of-Summer Activities for Families

As the lazy days of summer wind down, it’s the perfect time to squeeze in a little more fun with the family before the school-year hustle begins. Whether it’s soaking up the sunshine, planning a spontaneous backyard adventure, or enjoying a few last-minute road trips, these end of summer family activities will help you create meaningful memories that everyone will cherish. No fancy plans required—just time together, and maybe a few popsicles too.

1. Backyard Camping Adventure

Turn your backyard into a cozy campground for the night! Pitch a tent, roast marshmallows over a small fire pit or grill, and bring out cozy blankets. Don’t forget the flashlights or lanterns to make it feel like a real camping experience. Bonus points for spooky stories or a star-gazing session before bedtime!

2. Host a Family Field Day

Bring the fun of summer camp right to your yard with relay races, sack races, a water balloon toss, or tug-of-war. Create homemade medals or trophies and let everyone compete in good spirits. This is one of the best end of summer family activities to get everyone moving and laughing.

3. End-of-Summer Picnic

Pack a picnic basket with your family’s favorite finger foods and treats, and head to a local park or even your backyard. Add a few outdoor games like frisbee or cornhole, and you have a relaxing, joy-filled day everyone will love.

4. Plan a Sunset Water Adventure

Whether it’s paddle boarding, canoeing, kayaking, or simply floating on an inflatable raft, watching the sunset on the water is pure magic. Look for local lakes or rivers that allow rentals, or bring your own gear for a spontaneous evening on the water.

5. Create a Summer Scrapbook

Have the kids help choose photos and mementos from your summer adventures and put together a family scrapbook. Add fun captions, drawings, and stickers to relive the season while creating a keepsake you’ll treasure forever.

6. Backyard Movie Night

Set up a simple screen with a white sheet and a projector, or just use a laptop outdoors. Pop some popcorn, spread out cozy blankets and pillows, and enjoy a movie under the stars. This is a fun and budget-friendly way to enjoy a warm evening together.

7. Ice Cream Sundae Bar at Home

Build your own sundae station with all the fixings: sprinkles, crushed cookies, chocolate sauce, whipped cream, fruit, and cherries on top. Let everyone create their dream sundae for a sweet end-of-summer treat.

8. Take a Family Day Trip

Explore nearby towns or scenic spots you’ve never visited before. Whether it’s a quaint small-town festival, a hiking trail, or a historical site, discovering something new together is a great bonding experience.

9. Visit a Sunflower or Lavender Field

These vibrant fields are picture-perfect and often bloom toward the end of summer. Bring a picnic and take beautiful family photos while enjoying the peaceful, fragrant surroundings.

10. Water Play Day

Set up sprinklers, a kiddie pool, or water balloons in the yard and let the kids go wild. It’s an easy, affordable way to cool off and burn off some energy before settling into school routines.

11. Family Game Night

Bring out classic board games, play charades, or try a trivia contest for a cozy night in. Add some snacks and let everyone pick a game to play. It’s a great way to connect without screens and celebrate the end of summer together.

12. DIY Tie-Dye Party

Get some plain white t-shirts, socks, or pillowcases and a tie-dye kit. This creative project is fun for all ages and lets everyone express their style with a colorful summer souvenir.

13. Go for an Evening Nature Walk

As the sun sets and the weather cools down, take a walk around your neighborhood or a local trail. Point out plants, birds, and animals you see, and talk about what everyone enjoyed most about their summer.

14. Plan a Mini Backyard Carnival

Set up simple games like ring toss, bean bag throw, or balloon darts. Add homemade tickets and small prizes for a real carnival feel. Include popcorn and lemonade stands for extra fun!

15. Organize a Summer Scavenger Hunt

Create a list of summer-themed items to find around the house or outdoors (like a beach ball, popsicle stick, flower, or flip-flop). Offer a prize for whoever finds the most!

16. Host a Family Talent Show

Let each family member show off their special skills—singing, dancing, magic tricks, or even telling jokes. Record the event to look back on or share with friends and family!

17. Outdoor Arts and Crafts Day

Bring the art supplies outside and let kids paint, make nature-inspired crafts, or design their own chalk art murals on the sidewalk or driveway.

18. Cook a Meal Together

Choose a summer recipe and let everyone have a role in preparing dinner—from washing veggies to setting the table. Cooking together is a great way to bond while teaching life skills.

19. Backyard Obstacle Course

Use pool noodles, hula hoops, cones, and jump ropes to create a DIY obstacle course. Time each other and cheer each other on for a playful afternoon of fun and fitness.

20. Watch the Stars

Lay out some blankets and watch the night sky. Use a stargazing app to identify constellations and planets. It’s a peaceful and awe-inspiring way to wrap up a summer day.

21. Reflect and Set Goals for Fall

Gather as a family and talk about your favorite memories from summer. Then, look ahead and set some goals for the upcoming school year or season—whether it’s learning a new skill, reading more books, or planning your next adventure.

Final Thoughts

Saying goodbye to summer doesn’t have to feel like a downer. With a little creativity and intention, these end of summer family activities can bring everyone closer while celebrating the best parts of the season. Soak up the sunshine, share some laughs, and make these last days of summer truly count!

Thanks for this list. We’d probably go to a water park or on another road trip before summer ends. The other activities in your list we already do regularly so I guess we’d be going for the outdoors activities more.

Good list….Last year we visit a water park and we had a real good time. This year we might not be able to go out again but something like a home made pizza will be great for us.

We ate pizza and went swimming last night. It was so nice to get away for a few hours and enjoy spending time with the family.

Camping in the backyard was always one of my favorites growing up. We also ran through the sprinkler a ton growing up too. However, some cities frown on this during periods of drought.

It is hard to believe that summer is already almost over! I can’t get over it to be honest. It went by so fast, and with the weather that we have been experiencing… it seems like we didn’t have much of one at all to be honest. These are great ideas to close out the summer break!

Thanks for all the ideas. Can’t believe it is this time of year again, not sure where summer went. We also have our State Fair to look forward to. Our family tradition each year.

Why does summer have to go by so fast! We try to save our family trip to the end of summer so the memories last all year long!

It would be nice to make the most out of the summer before the school year starts! I think these are awesome ideas. We usually go on 2 week trip somewhere during the summer, but before the school starts we try to squeeze in a little swimming.

These are all such great suggestions! My girls go back to school on Wednesday, so we are going to the annual Blueberry Festival as a last summertime hurrah.

These are awesome ideas. We’re currently in the process of making the final weeks of summer truly epic for the kids. Thanks a lot!

  23. 08/10/2017 / 9:08 pm

I love these ideas! The kids only have about two weeks of summer break left, and I want to make sure it’s absolutely fantastic for them.

  24. 08/10/2017 / 8:38 pm

These are fantastic ideas but I’m going to jump right on top of a camping trip. What a great way to unwind at the end of summer and get some very valuable quality time with your kids. We family camped (tent camping) a huge amount when my kids were little. Now they are 33 and 35, and those memories are still some of our best.

We homeschool and have been waiting for back to school. Now we can head out to enjoy things without the crowds. We’ll have to do some of your items.
