These Cottage Cheese Turkey Meatballs may become your new favorite busy weeknight dinner!
You know those recipes that unexpectedly make it into your regular dinner rotation because everyone actually eats them and they're surprisingly easy? This is one of those meals.
As a busy mom, I'm always looking for dinner recipes that check all the boxes: easy to make, high in protein, family-friendly, and filling enough for growing kids. Bonus points if I can sneak in some extra nutrition without anyone noticing.

These Cottage Cheese Turkey Meatballs do exactly that. They're tender, flavorful, and secretly packed with zucchini and cottage cheese for extra protein and moisture. Each meatball has approximately 6 grams of protein and under 2.5 grams of carbs, making them a great option for high-protein turkey meatballs, healthy family dinners, or easy low-carb turkey meatballs for busy weeknights.
The best part? They're baked, covered in marinara sauce, topped with melty mozzarella, and made in one skillet, making cleanup quick and easy for busy parents.
Comfort food and a healthy dinner? I'll happily take both.

Helpful Kitchen Tools

For this recipe, I like to keep things simple and stick with a few kitchen tools that make dinner prep easier and less stressful-especially on those busy weeknights when everyone seems to be asking what's for dinner at once. I used a blender to make that smooth cottage cheese and zucchini mixture, a cast-iron skillet for baking everything in one pan, a cookie scoop to keep the meatballs evenly sized, and a meat thermometer so I know they're cooked perfectly every time.
If you're curious, these are similar to the kitchen staples I personally reach for most often in my kitchen: my Ninja blender for blending sauces and mixtures smoothly, a Lodge Cast Iron Skillet because it easily goes from stovetop to oven, a food thermometer to check doneness, and a cookie scoop that makes portioning meatballs so much quicker. These are the kinds of kitchen tools I use again and again.
How Cottage Cheese Makes These Meatballs Better

I know cottage cheese in meatballs might sound a little unexpected, but trust me on this one.
Once blended, cottage cheese completely disappears into the meat mixture while adding moisture, extra protein, and essential nutrients like calcium and B vitamins. It creates softer, more tender meatballs without adding any noticeable cottage cheese flavor.

How To Make Cottage Cheese Turkey Meatballs

Step 1: Blend the flavor mixture
Preheat your oven to 400°F. Add the chopped zucchini, cottage cheese, garlic, salt, onion powder, oregano, pepper, and red pepper flakes to a blender. Blend everything together until smooth and creamy, scraping down the sides as needed. This creates a flavorful mixture that keeps these Cottage Cheese Turkey Meatballs moist while adding extra protein and hidden veggies.
Step 2: Mix the meatball ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, add the ground turkey, Panko breadcrumbs, freshly shredded parmesan cheese, and the blended cottage cheese mixture. Using clean hands or a spoon, gently mix everything together just until combined. Try not to over-mix, as that can make turkey meatballs dense rather than tender. The mixture should feel moist but still easy to shape.
Step 3: Roll and arrange the meatballs

Scoop out approximately two tablespoons of the meat mixture and roll into meatballs. Continue until all the mixture is used, which should make around 22-25 meatballs. Place them in a cast-iron skillet or oven-safe baking dish. Don't worry if they sit close together.
Step 4: Bake until fully cooked

Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the meatballs are cooked through and reach an internal temperature of 165°F. Once done, carefully remove the skillet from the oven and gently loosen the meatballs using a spatula.
Step 5: Add sauce and cheese

Pour the marinara sauce over the meatballs and gently stir to coat them. Sprinkle freshly shredded mozzarella evenly over the top and return the skillet to the oven.

Bake for another 5-10 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly. Garnish with fresh parsley if desired and serve warm.
My Tips

A few things I learned while recipe testing these high-protein turkey meatballs:
Start with fewer breadcrumbs. Ground turkey moisture levels vary, so start with 1½ cups and gradually add more if needed.
Freshly shredded cheese melts better. It tastes better, too.
Use a cookie scoop. It keeps the meatballs evenly sized so they cook consistently.
Don't over-mix. Gentle mixing creates softer meatballs.
Variations

Need to switch things up?
For lower carbs, swap panko for almond flour, crushed pork rinds, or low-carb breadcrumbs, giving you options to tailor the recipe to your health goals and feel empowered in the kitchen.
You can also use extra-lean ground beef instead of turkey, if preferred. Just drain any excess fat before adding the sauce.
Ricotta can also replace cottage cheese, though its protein content will be slightly lower.
What To Serve With Cottage Cheese Turkey Meatballs

These are delicious served over:
- zucchini noodles
- spaghetti squash
- pasta
- roasted vegetables
- garlic bread
- salad
If your family loves cozy dinners, you may also enjoy Creamy Chicken Pesto Pasta, Creamy Tuscan Chicken, or Mexican Casserole.
Meal Prep and Storage Tips
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
For freezer meals, freeze cooked meatballs without sauce for up to 2 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator and reheat with sauce before serving.
