8 Ideas to a Fun and Affordable Memorial Day

Here we are finally, the start of the summer season and Memorial Day is upon us.  Now is the best time to get the family all together for some good times and great memories.

Check out some of these fun and affordable ideas to make this Memorial Day a super one!

Looking for fun and affordable ways to celebrate Memorial Day? Here are 8 ideas!

BBQ Fun.  So if you are lucky to have good weather, then go ahead and have an easy BBQ right at home with all the fixins.  You can keep things low cost by grilling hotdogs and hamburgers only and making homemade sides instead of buying the expensive store bought ones.  Pick up a whole watermelon, slice it up, and there you have it!

Campfire.  The best part of the warm summer nights to come is going camping, but why not start now right in your backyard? The kids will love roasting marshmallows!  You can also just head out to a local campground and rent a site for the day and have an affordable, yet fun-filled day of grilling and creating memories.

Picnic Fun.  Now here is where you can get really creative!  Get the kids involved and pack a fun picnic to take to your local park. A helpful tip is to send Dad early to reserve a good spot and while he’s hanging out there, you can get the kids in the kitchen to make their favorite sandwiches and snacks.  Bring some outdoor games and you have a super easy, yet affordable, day ahead!

Movie.  Don’t let inclement weather get you down this Memorial Day.  Just let everyone pick a movie, pop some popcorn, and hunker down for a movie festival.  With all the movie streaming options these days, you are bound to find a favorite for everyone.  Here is a perfect time to even have an indoor picnic right in the living room.

Scavenger Hunt.  Bring back family interactive games like a scavenger hunt.  You can go online and print a list of items and either hunt indoors or outdoors.  This is a perfect time to get everyone involved in finding all kinds of interesting items.  Offer a fun prize to the winner who finds everything on the list too!

Potluck with family and friends.  Now here is an idea that not only saves money, but time as well. Pick a central location, a big backyard or a local park. Simply ask your friends and family to pitch in with side dishes, drinks, desserts – whatever they want to make for a cookout and there you have it, a perfect potluck!

Groupon deals.  There are many deals you can find by searching on Groupon for Memorial Day weekend.  Make sure you check the fine print so that your coupon can be used on a holiday. Deep discounts range from go-kart racing to indoor entertainment venues like Dave & Busters.  First time users often can get a $10 off promotion too!

Music Festival.  Check out your local area for free Music Festivals.  This is a great way to get a whole lot of entertainment for your money.  Typically festivals are 2 or 3 day events and often end with firework displays.  Call or visit your city’s tourism office .

Most people think that holiday celebrations are expensive, but if you get creative and plan accordingly it can be just the opposite.  Set a budget for yourself, stick to it, and see what kind of fun you can plan this Memorial Day! And most of all, let’s all cross our fingers for great weather!

This Memorial Day, my family and I decided to stay home. My sisters and their families will be visiting, so we’ll stay here with mom, and enjoy a family BBQ!

I agree with your suggestions. Holidays should not be expensive. We just have to find the right activity that would suit any age group. For Memorial Day, we are going to have a BBQ cookout in our backyard. My sister will help with some of the dishes and the rest will be potluck. Nothing beats good food and family!

These are all really fun ideas. We usually go to the parade, then host a cookout later in the day, weather permitting.
