5 Ways to Prepare Your Home for Spring

The winter weather breaks. The furnace stops running around the clock. Sweaters and boots move to the back of the closet. Spring is here, and the world feels new again.

Prepaaring Home For Spring

Spring is one of the most important times of the year for regular home maintenance. These five tips give you a great place to start your annual spring maintenance routine and will help keep your home in tiptop shape as you swing into spring.

  1. Have Your Air Conditioning Unit Serviced

As the weather warms and unexpectedly hot days pop up in the spring, it may be tempting to crank up the air conditioning. Before you set the temperature to frosty, remember that your air conditioner should be checked at least once a year to rule out any problems. Make plans now to schedule an air conditioning tune-up. This is also a good time to replace any HVAC filters if you haven’t already.

  1. Clean Your Gutters

As you hurry to get out and enjoy the weather, take some time to clean your gutters. Clogged gutters can cause a lot of heartache! Gutters are designed to keep rainwater flowing away from your home, and water is the natural enemy of the building materials that hold your house together. Your home can withstand water, but only if that water is efficiently removed from the structure as quickly as possible. Pooling water is a recipe for disaster. Clogged gutters can allow water to get into your home, which can cause expensive — and dangerous — structural damage.

  1. Inspect for Damage

Taking the time to inspect your home for damage caused by winter snow and ice is one of the simplest yet most significant steps you can take to maintaining your home. Visually inspecting areas such as your roof, chimney, downspouts, patios, sidewalks, and driveways can help prevent safety issues or further damage to your home. Additionally, if you notice any issues with your guttering system during the inspection, such as rust or leaks, it might be a good opportunity to consider upgrading. For instance, you may want to get new aluminium guttering to enhance the durability and performance of your drainage system.

  1. Check Your GFCI Outlets

Ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) outlets should be installed at every power supply in your home button, and the radio should turn back on. If the “Test” or “Reset” buttons aren’t functioning properly, it is time to call a professional to have your electrical system checked.

  1. Prune Overgrown Greenery

The earliest days of spring are a great time for doing any pruning that you missed during late fall. Keeping greenery pruned away from your home can prevent damage from branches or insects. This is also a good time to remove any trees or shrubs that may be causing problems with your foundation or sewage lines.

Setting a day or two days aside for home maintenance tasks in the spring can help you enjoy the weather while you take care of your home. It can also save you time and money by promptly addressing any problems that developed during the winter months. Have a great spring, and be safe!
