Organizing Your Home for a Healthier Life: The Benefits of Decluttering

Learn how to reduce stress, improve your health, save money, and create a tranquil living environment by organizing your space. Explore this blog post to discover more.

While some have successfully embraced a minimalist lifestyle, there are those of us who thrive on aesthetics. Who doesn’t love home accessories, seasonal decorations, fabrics, and bedding for every occasion, and having enough tools in your garage to dismantle a rocket ship if you ever needed to? We have so many ideas and are constantly bombarded with furniture and styles that we want to implement until, at some point, the objects we buy exceed the amount of space we actually have for them. It’s common knowledge that a disorganized and cluttered home can lead to feelings of anxiety, stress, and overwhelm. But did you know that a cluttered environment can also lead to health problems? In this blog post, we’ll explore the physical and mental health benefits of having an organized and decluttered home.

The Physical Health Benefits of Decluttering Your Home

benefits of decluttering

Decluttering and organizing your home not only creates a more visually appealing space, it also contributes to better health by reducing the risk of allergens and even hazardous particles in your living environment. Dust is inevitable. They are tiny particles that can sometimes irritate your eyes and make your skin and nose itch. However, in worst-case scenarios, they can lead to a number of health issues, particularly for those who suffer from allergies, asthma, or other respiratory issues.

Accessories out in the open, and the accumulation of dust go hand in hand. It’s important to continuously dust and wipe down surfaces and objects in your home to avoid buildup and help reduce the number of allergens in your environment. If your home gets particularly dusty, you might want to consider purchasing an air purifier to help eliminate some of the tiny particles floating around. HEPA filters can remove most airborne particles including bacteria, mold, and pollen. Frankly, there may be nothing more important than breathing clean air in the environment you spend the most time in. Your skin, lungs, and overall physical well-being will thank you.

The Mental Health Benefits of an Organized Home

Overwhelm and anxiety are normal feelings that arise when you look around your living space and see a mess. As busy moms, we’ve all been there. Scattered items that should be in a closet or pantry, a millimeter of dust on décor that hasn’t been touched in weeks, your family’s shoes and outerwear piled up at the entryway. Additionally, clutter in the form of items that aren’t needed anymore, are old, or have outlived their usefulness can be particularly depressing. They can make you feel stuck, indecisive, and like you’re losing control. The more clutter that accumulates, the more you’re distracted by it, adding an increasing number of tasks to your mental to-do list. Your productivity and energy levels tend to decrease as a result.

When your home is organized, not only is it easier to find what you need reducing the stress and frustration that comes with searching for lost items, it gives you feelings of serenity and peace, and improves your mood, productivity, and overall wellbeing. It promotes self-care by allowing you the time to focus and do things for yourself, like taking a relaxing bubble bath, instead of doing things for your home.

Without mess and clutter, your living room will suddenly look brighter and more spacious. An organized kitchen will make cooking, meal preparation, and even clean up faster and more enjoyable, freeing up time to spend on other activities that contribute to your well-being. Similarly, studies have shown that having a clutter free bedroom allows for better, faster sleep and a more restful environment. After all, clutter has a funny way of constantly reminding us of what needs to be done tomorrow, causing unnecessary anxiety and exhaustion before bedtime.

The Financial Benefits of Decluttering

In addition to the numerous health and mental benefits, having a decluttered and organized home can also have financial advantages. Household objects take up space and by removing excess items that no longer serve a purpose, you are creating more space in your environment. While this may not seem like a direct financial benefit, it can translate into one in the form of environmental impact and lower utility bills. Less cleaning and washing use less water, fewer electronics and appliances running mean lower electricity bills. Decluttering will help change your mindset to find ways to reduce your environmental impact and carbon footprint, helping you save money in unexpected ways.

Selling your gently used items for extra money is a great motivator for getting rid of things you don’t use or need anymore. It’s also a good solution to offset the costs of any organizing supplies or storage solutions you may need for reorganizing your home. With so many marketplace apps for selling used items such as Facebook Marketplace, Poshmark, and Decluttr, getting rid of your unwanted items is as easy as signing up and uploading a photo. If you have the time or just prefer to interact with people personally, host a weekend yard or garage sale for your local community.

When you get rid of clutter, the last thing on your mind is going out to buy more stuff to replace everything you just got rid of. In other words, you’ll begin being mindful about future purchases and will likely consider the value an item will bring to your life before deciding to bring it into your home. The ultimate goal will be to reduce impulse buying and make more informed spending decisions. An organized home not only creates peace of mind but also helps you keep more money in your wallet.

Organizing your home is not just about creating an aesthetically pleasing space (although that ranks high on the list!), it’s about improving your overall health and well-being. By decluttering and organizing your home, you can reduce stress and anxiety, promote better health, save money, and create a peaceful and relaxing living environment. So, take the first step in decluttering today and start organizing your home for a healthier and happier life.

I love decluttering my apartment. Although sometimes it’s hard to let go of precious things, I realise that I lose interest in them the longer its there.

I’d love to be able to sell some of my older furniture. Unfortunately, where I live, there’s not a huge market for second hand stuff. I end up giving stuff away – but this also serves as a reminder to not shop so much that I cannot manage to store things.

I don’t like clutter at all. I always make sure that our house is clutter-free and I’m training my boys to do that. 🙂

It really does release stress when the house is not cluttered. I started a declutter over the holiday break but had guests arrive as a surprise (family so it was wonderful). Maybe i”ll get a chance again on Spring Break.

Great tips and information! I’ve been doing this a bit myself recently, going through rooms one by one to de-clutter and get rid of a bunch of stuff we don’t need/want. What ever I can’t sell will be donated.

We decluttered and minimalized our lives while living in a small one bedroom apartment in Chicago and have kept a similar mindset since moving and buying our own home. It makes it so much easier to keep tidy which helps with our anxiety and stress a ton!

I go through and declutter our house every few months. We don’t accumulate a lot, but it always feels good to let things go we don’t need anymore. And if the house isn’t clean and organized, it definitely causes me anxiety and stress.

After moving a few times in the past couple years – I try to keep an organized home. I’ve definitely learned the benefits of decluttering and staying decluttered with moves.

  29. 02/21/2023 / 1:05 am

I love a clean and organized home. Of course, until I became a mom, I was able to keep things that way easily. Since then, it’s been hard to keep up. But I do know that it affects me when I don’t declutter. I can’t focus on the work that I have to do and instead end up tidying up. So there’s definitely a mental health benefit when a house is organized and decluttered

I was taught, thank goodness, to clean the house every Saturday. While I don’t continue to clean every Saturday, I do appreciate a clutter-free living environment. I don’t know how some people live in so much clutter. Even if no one sees my clutter, I know it reflects my current state of mind, and I feel propelled to do something about it. Thanks for the reminders and wise tips!

  31. 02/20/2023 / 11:25 pm

Ah yes! The whole idea of being able to open my windows everyday to let the light in and be able to sweep out and mop my floors everyday, makes me declutter regularly.

  32. 02/20/2023 / 11:21 pm

I completely agree with you but I also believe that decluttering and organizing can directly lead to improving your attention span and focus: a refreshed mental space.

  33. 02/20/2023 / 10:59 pm

It’s amazing how much of an impact our living environment can have on our overall well-being. This blog post highlights the benefits of decluttering and organizing your space, from reducing stress to improving your health.

I used to love to have “things,” but after the first time we decluttered, I felt such a huge difference in our lives. So much less to clean and less money spent. I love it!

I am all for decluttering, organizing, and keeping a minimalist home. I like to have decor items to add a cozy feel – but like when everything is in it’s proper place!
