The structure is often compared to the skeleton on which the entire narrative rests. You can think through the order of the narrative in advance and make a clear text, or you can pour out a stream of consciousness that no one but you will understand. Group your thoughts
Do you know the difference between a well-structured text and a stream of consciousness?
In a stream of consciousness, thoughts go in the order in which the author thought them. First one thing, then another, then “by the way, I just remembered” – and then the first thing again.
In cinematography, there are such concepts as flashback (when we interrupt the narrative to show events from the past) and flashforward (when we look into the future). These are good techniques for fiction, but for blog post writing, they are simply terrible.
The reader will get confused in the endless series of “by the way,” “remember, we will come back to this,” and “we already wrote above, go back and reread,” and will not understand you and will leave. No one will jump back and forth through the text and reread individual pieces to collect a complete picture in their head.
If we make the analogy with cities, it’s like if after the 2nd house, there will be the 10th, then the 6th, and then two 4s at once.
The flow of thoughts can be written at the stage of the thesis plan. We dump everything that is in our heads on paper and then group the facts by meaning – this is how sections are obtained. Then we arrange the sections in order of logic or importance – and now we have a ready structure.
In the final text, each fact should be in its place.
If you have a large text, the usual two-level structure “Article → Section” may not be enough. In this case, you will have to create subsections.
Choose between sequential and parallel narrative
A sequential narrative is when each subsequent thought follows from the previous one. It is suitable when you need to explain something, argue, or tell a story.
Parallel narration is when thoughts are not connected to each other, and they can be read in any order or selectively. If we skip one of the parallel blocks, we will still understand the general gist.
This is convenient when we have a set of facts, but we do not know which ones will interest the reader. We simply dump them all, make convenient navigation – and the reader decides what to read.
Sections and subsections also have their own structure. Therefore, several forms of narration can be mixed into one text. For example, this article consists of several tips that can be read in any order. This is a parallel structure. But each tip is a separate sequential story. The stories themselves should be read from beginning to end – this is a sequential structure.
At the planning stage, think about where you will have a coherent story and where you will have just a set of facts in no particular reading order.
Simplify navigation
Texts on the Internet are rarely read from beginning to end. Usually, the reader skims, picks out something important, and goes there. Sometimes, on the contrary, your text is so important that people will want to reread some parts of it several times.
Therefore, readers need help to navigate. Headlines are responsible for this. The headline should make it clear what this section is about.
“But what about creativity?!” you ask. If you can do it creatively and clearly, that would be great. If you can’t do this, just make it clear. It will be much better than just being creative.
The highest level of skill is when the heading not only shows the content of the section but also contains useful information. This is how the headings are made in this article. Each of them is like a short tip, which is revealed in detail inside the section.
If your text is too long, make a hypertext table of contents at the beginning – a list of links that can be used to go to the desired section.
Important things should be in a prominent place
Readers don’t have an infinite amount of time, and your text is not a new book by George Martin that makes people drop everything and read it to pieces.
It doesn’t matter what you’re doing: an article for a blog, a landing page, or an essay – you need to fight for the reader’s attention. If they get bored, they will leave. If they don’t understand, they will leave. If they can’t find an answer to their question, they will leave again.
Therefore, place the most important and interesting information in the most visible places:
- At the beginning of the text, section, paragraph
- Near the illustration
- In the title
- In all sorts of quotes, color plates, etc.
How should you do this while writing a blog post? If you make a long, boring introduction, then no one will read the interesting part. If you must tell readers about something boring, throw it somewhere at the end. That is why all sorts of footnotes, explanations for asterisks, and legal information are written at the very end – so the reader does not get bored.
