Home Improvement Ideas for Keeping Cool This Summer

The often scorching hot temperatures of the summer are great for a day at the beach. Yet, when you’re in your house, the outdoor temperatures can make it difficult to get comfortable and stay cool. Sure, you could crank up the air conditioner, but keeping it on full-blast 24/7 is going to cause your energy bill to skyrocket.

So, what else can be done to stave off the summer heat?

To avoid the expense, inconvenience, and discomfort of overheating, here are a few home improvement ideas to keep you cool this year:

Complete Air Conditioner Maintenance

The ac is the first device you’ll rely on in the summer months when you get hot. To ensure it will function properly and keep you cool, however, you have to keep up with routine maintenance. Changing the ac filter, checking hoses, and cleaning the ventilation system make it possible for cool air to safely travel throughout the home. If you’re using your ac often, it can get quite expensive pretty quickly.

Change Window Treatments

You may adore the way the natural light comes into your house from your windows, but in the summer this direct sunlight draws a lot of heat. To keep your property cool, you’ll need to change the window treatments. Opt for something that can reflect the light. For example, there are energy efficient blackout curtains. These curtains are just as stylish as other styles but are made of materials that keep the sun out. Just don’t forget to lock up your windows if you go out – there are plenty of ways you can secure your home and windows, but keeping everything locked when you are not home is particularly important during the summer as you do not want to encourage a break in.

Install Ceiling Fans

Keeping the air conditioner going for hours at a time will raise your energy bill. However, that’s not the only way you can keep cool. Ceiling fans can help with air circulation and beating the heat. They come in a variety of materials, sizes, and styles to match your home’s decor. Having them allows you to lower the temperature on the air conditioner and instead allow the fans to push the cold air around.

Get Rid of Incandescent Lights

If you still have traditional incandescent light bulbs in your home it’s time to get rid of them. Not only do they use a lot of energy but they generate a decent amount of heat. To keep temperatures low in the summer you should switch to compact fluorescent lamps which do not use as much energy or generate heat.

Change Your Bedding

Would you like to give your bedrooms a seasonal vibe while also keeping cool this summer? Changing your bedding to something more accommodating is the ultimate solution. Heavy comforters, fleece blankets, and flannel sheets are ideal for keeping the heat in, but you’re better off with cotton and lightweight fabrics in the summer.

Upgrade Windows and Doors

If you have older windows and doors it’s very possible that your cool air is escaping through the cracks. If you have the money to do so, hire experts to upgrade your windows and doors. With more efficient and secure models available you’ll be able to maintain a steady temperature in the house for longer.

Invest in an Outdoor Living Space

You can keep your house a lot cooler in the summer if you spend more time outdoors. Your backyard serves as an extension of your home and can be quite entertaining. You can plant trees and fences for shade and privacy, invest in a high-quality grill so you can cook outdoors instead of warming up your kitchen, and perhaps get a pool so everyone can take a dip and lower their body temperatures.

The summer is a very popular season. It’s one everyone looks forward to after a harsh winter and rainy spring. Yet, it’s also one of the most uncomfortable seasons. The high temperatures and hazy humidity make it sometimes unbearable to be outdoors. When this happens, you’d like to have a nice, cool place to retreat to. So, do yourself a favor and use the information provided to beat the heat in your home this summer.
