If you live in or near the Washington D.C. metro area or plan to be here in the next few weeks, stop by the National Building Museum for the free The Big Build Festival, on Saturday, September 20 from 10 am–4 pm.
For the first time ever, festival attendees will witness a new Guinness World Records attempt made from Superstructs. In a collaboration with international toy company WABA Fun, LLC, makers of Superstructs construction toys and Kinetic Sand, the “World’s Tallest Construction Toy Tower” will be constructed inside the Museum’s vast Great Hall, surpassing the previous record of 114 feet. A team of engineers from Southern Methodist University (SMU) Lyle School of Engineering won a competition to design the structure and will be on hand to see its completion. A Guinness World Records representative will confirm the record at 3 pm.
In addition to taking part in construction of the World’s Tallest Toy, visitors to the Big Build will find a diverse array of exciting and educational, hands-on activities. Builders young and old can discover what it’s like to build a brick wall, carve stone, drive nails, construct a log cabin, climb aboard real construction vehicles in the Construction Vehicle Petting Zoo, expanded to a full city block this year, and much more. They’ll work side-by-side with plumbers, electricians, ironworkers, landscape architects, woodworkers, and experts in many other fields to learn about their professions and hobbies.
The festival is a free, drop-in program. Museum exhibitions will be open; regular ticket prices apply.
