During the first 3 years, a child's brain experiences dramatic changes through the use of the five senses- sight, hearing, smell, touch and taste. That's why as parents, we are encouraged to provide our children an environment where their developing minds are challenged and are stimulated through multi-sensory experiences.
Braincandy is a series of developmental DVD's that teaches young children ages 6 months and up to learn about themselves and the world through their five senses. The genius creators of this wonderfully engaging DVD for children had concocted a sweet and simple recipe: to show real children engaged in everyday experiential things that children who are watching can mimic and repeat in the real world. The integration of all five funny sense puppets (eyes, nose, ears, hands, and tongue) plus the brain puppet Bruce the Brain along with simple, colorful face animations, and children dancing to different types of music- all motivate young children to interact and participate.
Gabriel is not one to sit on the tv for too long (thank God!) not even when his favorite Barney or Boobah characters come on. I think it's because he gets bored easily. He loves dancing and singing though, which I think are what motivates him to want to watch tv in the first place. Try as I might and I know I am guilty of sharing my work with my kids, still it's guilty pleasure seeing him imitate the dancing and singing of his favorite show characters. I'm not kidding when I say that he's probably one of a few barely three year old kids in the whole universe who can coordinate difficult Boobah dance steps like he choreographed them himself. The kid can dance really amazingly!(Excuse the mommy proudness, LOL..just wanted to share that).
So Gabriel found new favorite characters in Braincandy, especially Bruce the Brain and Mojo the Mouth. He giggles whenever "Taste My World" is played. Braincandy doesn't seem to bore him as easily as the other characters he's used to. Not that I like the idea of him infront of the tv for a long time, but Braincandy definitely does the trick for when I need to distract him from me for a bit. What's cool too is that now he can really say the words "yummy" and "yucky" and distinguish the meaning between those two words as well. And the kids dancing with their colorful banners- he loves mimicking them! I thought the music is fun and presented beautifully too. I also like the fact that they feature different types of songs- not just Mozart or classical music. There are reggae and other recognizable modern tunes as well that any kid (or adult) will enjoy listening to. Now whenever we play any of the Braincandy 5 Senses DVD and Gabriel hears the cute intro song, he starts singing along and in fact has already memorized the first few lines of the song. His little brother Jaden is just as excited whenever the shows come on too. Like he can sense when his big brother is happy or excited- and he picks up from that. (Just too cute!).
Overall, I'll give the Braincandy "5 Senses" DVD Series five stars! It's a chock-full of age-appropriate content and a great introduction if you want your babies and toddlers to learn the basic functions of the 5 Senses in a very creative and playful way. My kids are having fun watching it, while learning new things at the same time!

I really love these types of gifts for my girls. I want them to have as much help as they can get in life, and they watch no TV (it just doesn't grasp their attention enough), something like this would be great for their father and I to do with them and help teach them things as well as watch them dance their hearts out!
