From “modern mom” to magnificent, Julie Bowen embra
Here are select quotes from the cover story:
On Her Skin
“I think my skin is happier now than it ever has been—even compared to when I was a teenager. But, I’d like to trade in some body parts from when I was younger. But that’s the kids; I blame the kids [her three sons].”
On Her Moment of Zen
“It’s hard with three kids. My downtime is my up time. But hair in a ponytail, minimal makeup, out with my kids running around and collapsing at the end of an active day feels good. That feeling that you earned it feels really good.”
On Her Strangest Beauty Secret
“I remember reading an article when I was a kid about Molly Ringwald when she was on the cover of Time, and they asked her a similar question [about her strangest beauty secret] and she said, ‘What do you think I do, steam my face over a plate of spaghetti?’ And of course, I immediately tried it. That is something I still do. I know it sounds crazy, but I love to occasionally put a towel over my head and just hold it over the steam.”
On the Influence of Her Modern Family Co-Star Sofia Vergara
“Sofia is a great influence for me. She is a great influence on being a woman, she’s a great influence on accepting the power of pretty and she’s a great influence on having a sense of humor…She doesn’t go out without putting on lipstick and she is the first person to say to me: ‘Where is your lipstick? Put it on!’ She’s always at award shows telling me that, and I always feel so weird, like someone will think I’m trying too hard. She tells me all the time, ‘Who cares?’”
On the Red Carpet
“What an assembly line they are! There are people shoving you out there and yelling. As someone at home watching the red carpet show, it looks so glamorous, but it is very much a factory.”
“No matter what you do, somebody will get ‘the picture’ of you—that one with you bending the wrong way or the one with one eye closed. Then they run it and say, ‘she’s drunk, she’s fat.’ Then the next page says, ‘she’s too thin.’ The person in front of you is Cate Blanchett and the person coming up behind is 12, so there’s always someone who is going to look better.”
I love Julie’s honesty on things that concern us all women and just being a real mom!
