I felt honored and excited when I was asked to read and review Henry and the Hidden Veggie Garden by Kimberly Williams-Paisley of the comedy hit film “Father of the Bride” fame.
I do buy a lot of children’s books for my kids, but this book just came in time for me. Being concerned about my kids’ nutritional status, this book inspired me to look for even more ways on how I can make my kids to eat healthier foods.
Short summary: This adorable little book is about a typical young boy named Henry who loves television, video games, burgers, and pizza. One night while having dinner, Henry’s mother saw him hiding his veggies under his pizza so she decided it’s time he starts liking and eating vegetables. The next morning Henry’s mother took him to visit with his aunt and uncle and his cousin Huck, who live in a farm with dogs, pigs, horses- and lots of crunchy and yummy vegetables!
Although Henry was hesitant at first about staying in the farm for a few days, his cousin Huck showed him things around the farm that he hasn’t seen before. He was soon introduced to many different fresh vegetables that grow in the farm and when Huck showed Henry his ‘little secret’, Henry’s view on eating vegetables completely changed.
My three year old liked this book. At first I was worried the story might be a little too long for him but I was surprised it actually held his attention long enough that he now knows vegetables are good and yummy. The cute illustrations throughout the book definitely helped kept his interest too.
Henry and the Hidden Veggie Garden is Kimberly Williams-Paisley’s first book. She co-authored this book with her father Gurney Williams III, who is a writer and author of many other children’s books himself. Like most moms, Ms. Paisley is concerned about the importance of fresh, healthy foods on our children’s diets and encouraging healthy playtime. So she joined Hidden Valley Ranch Salad Dressings, along with the School Nutrition Foundation and Produce for Better Health Foundation, to support their “Love Your Veggies” program, which gives grants to schools wanting their students to have better access to fresh, healthy fruits and vegetables.
I would highly recommend this book to any parent who wants to have their kids eat healthier. And a bargain for only $5, this book is wonderful! I’m sure I’ll be reading this book to my kids many more times as I progress through introducing many different kinds of fruits and vegetables to them.
