The birth of a baby is one of life’s biggest events. If you’re planning a baby shower for the special mom-to-be in your life, you can make it meaningful without hurting your wallet. Fortunately, these days, you can find a ton of fantastic ideas to make a special occasion (like a baby shower) look elaborate, without going over your budget. I’ve hosted many baby showers for family and friends in the past, so I’m happy to be able to finally write this post and share my own tips.
And if you ask me for my one top personal tip: Don’t slave over planning and executing a great baby shower or spend a lot of money to make it happen. With a little creative vision and a few inventive, personal touches, you’ll have a sunny baby shower that everyone will enjoy! Plus, these personal tips from me and Tastefully Simple should get you off to a great start!
Theme: Ask the parents to-be if they have a preference for colors and theme for the shower. If they don’t, look at the baby’s room décor, gender and name. If you opt not to have a theme, a simple, bright decor scheme and flowers are sufficient for a celebration of birth. Keep decorations minimal, as all attention will be focused, anyway, on the star of the show: the mother-to-be.
I love these fantastic baby shower decor ideas from Tastefully Simple:
1. Add ribbon or tassels to your cake stand for a unique look.
2. Use a chalkboard or small sign to create a custom message for the mother-to-be.
3. Paint glass jars for your centerpiece by pouring a small amount of acrylic paint inside the jars. Swirl the jar to distribute the paint and then let dry.
Personally, I love adding paper lanterns, fresh flowers and coordinating balloons to make the party area more fun and festive. I also love lighted scented candles on top of tables, mantels and main entry way to create a warm and inviting feel to the whole house when my guests come in.
Getting The Word Out: Invitations (whether by phone, mail or email) should be sent at least three weeks in advance to an intimate number of friends and family members. Make a guest list with the help of the parents to-be so that no one is forgotten. Also, decide if men and children will be welcome. The traditional way is to have a women-only event, but nowadays, I see more fathers/husbands getting invited in baby shower events too.
Tastefully Simple is making it simple and fun for you to invite your guests with these adorable evites! Just register for your own free account and once you’re logged in, you can create your own baby shower evite that best fits your theme and colors. And whether you’re sending out invitations by mail, email or by phone call, make sure to do it at least six weeks in advance and provide a map/directions to the venue and an “RSVP by” date at least a week before the event.
Choose A Menu: Choose foods that are easy to prepare and that everyone will enjoy. I love the convenience of these Tastefully Simple Springtime Celebrations Collection that makes it so simple to have a complete baby shower menu with tasty, easy to follow recipes that are sure to wow your guests!

Make It Fun with Games. What’s a baby shower without some fun games and activities? I love the ideas included in this roundup of 30+ baby shower games. I also want to add that in one of the baby showers I co-hosted, we had each of our female guests bring a photograph of herself as an infant. Then we strung the pictures along a wall with a clothesline and pins. We then numbered the clothespins and have guests write down guesses as to which pin is holding whose photo. We had a master list and the host acted as judge.
Unwrapping Gifts. If you’re hosting, designate a friend or family member to be in-charge of recording the gifts and their givers. I always have a small basket with scissors, large trash bags, a notebook and a pencil, and sticky labels to make this process a breeze for the recorder, as well as for the mom-to-be when it’s time for her to send those thank you cards to her gift-givers.
During the party, introduce the guests to each other if needed. Mingle, eat, take pictures and have fun. Make sure the mother-to-be is also comfortable and happy — after all, this day is for her and her soon-to-be bundle of joy!
