How to Upgrade Your Older Model Car with After-Market Vehicle Technologies

I don’t know about you, but I appreciate the latest technologies that help simplify my life. I still really love my car GPS, our easy to use home security system that helps us monitor our home while we’re away, a few phone apps I use to communicate with my loved ones from far away and so much more.

Recently, I had the wonderful opportunity to work with the Vehicle Tech Team at Consumer Technology Association to test drive an older model car that was upgraded with after-market vehicle technologies. Who knew that you could drive a five year old car and you can still enjoy the same latest technologies that a brand new car offers?

after-market vehicle technologies

I have a newer, two year old car and it came with features I love such as a back up camera, a blind-spot detection system, a front touch screen where I can connect to my Apple iPhone for my audio entertainment and more. But if you don’t have these features in your older model car, you’ll be glad to know that now, you can have these features by adding after-market technologies in your car.

Here are a few after-market vehicle products worth mentioning:

Apple CarPlay – Available on select cars, CarPlay by Apple is a smarter, safer way to use your iPhone in your car’s built-in display. CarPlay helps you get directions, make calls, send and receive messages, and listen to music, all in a way that allows you to stay focused while you drive. Simply connect your iPhone and go.

Android Auto – This is the Android version of CarPlay for those who have Android phones. Android Auto is a simpler way to use your phone in the car. Whether on your phone screen or on your car display, Android Auto was designed with safety and convenience in mind. With larger touch targets, a simplified interface, and your Google Assistant, it’s designed to minimize distraction so you can stay focused on the road.

Viper SmartStart Remote Start – My husband gifted me the Viper remote start for my car two years ago and I absolutely love it!  With this technology, I can remotely start, lock and unlock my car  just by pushing a button on my smartphone. It helps a lot when my car is freezing from the cold weather and I can start and warm it up for 15 minutes without actually going outside — thanks to my Viper remote start system! I know this same car remote technology is offered by other brands such as Alpine and VOXX Electronics, but I absolutely love my car’s Viper remote start capability!

Rear Seat Entertainment Systems –  My family loves going on road trips and with kids who get easily bored in the car, we have to have our rear seat entertainment system.  If you’re looking to get one for your new or older model car, there are various after-market car technologies available in the market right now that are affordable, easy to install and work very well. I found a few products on Amazon and Best Buy, but do a thorough research before buying one.

So what do you think about these after-market vehicle technologies? What are some of the current features in your car that you can’t live without? Tell me in the comments!

I’m wanting to add blue tooth to my older car. Hope I can figure that one out.

I suppose there must be some minimum requirements when installing the Androud and Apple software with respect to the video display in the vehicle.

    • February 11, 2019 / 10:08 pm

@John You don’t need a video display in your older model car. These after-market technologies provide the video display and the software system. I would check with CTA and/or talk to a professional that specializes in these areas.

I’m all for anything that encourages people to hold onto their vehicles longer. We’re such a throw-away society that we’re purchasing ourselves into an Eco-catastrophy!

  15. February 9, 2019 / 9:09 pm

I would never have guessed that it’s possible to put this new technology in an older car. So cool!!

Both of our cars are older and my sons wish we had some of these devices. My husband offered to buy me a remote a few years ago since we have harsh winters, but I turned it down. Sometimes I wish I hadn’t.

I didn’t know this but made notes of things I can get my husband for his Birthday or Christmas. Or even as a Valentines Day Gift like the Viper SmartStart Remote Start – because like you we have a Kia and it’s 2 years old but didn’t come with a lot of these features which would make our lives so much easier.

  25. February 8, 2019 / 6:35 pm

I need to try these out. My car is 2010 and I wish it had better features. I don’t even have a screen!

Honestly cars are not my thing. I just want them to get me from point A to point B and back again. Now my husband is all into the cars and all the fancy stuff that comes with them.

  31. February 8, 2019 / 11:56 am

I really need the rear seat entertainment in my van, I have four kids and sometimes they just hate being in the car. We have a older van so this was the perfect post for me.

As long as we have the GPS and the music in the car, I’m good with it. ?Kidding aside, I’m so amazed with the latest technological evolutions!

  36. February 7, 2019 / 6:25 pm

If I used all this technology on my old fiat Punto (something that I can do, actually) the car would de even more iconic and fascinating.

  37. February 7, 2019 / 4:49 pm

I am liking the one where you can use your smartphone to auto unlock and lock your car and to autostart it. That is a pretty darn cool thing especially if you are trying to warm up the car before you get inside.

  38. February 7, 2019 / 3:30 pm

This is a great post full of ideas, I do admit I leave the technology side to my husband 🙂 x

We already have a rear seat entertainment system. Helps to ease the kids’ boredom when we do long road trips. I would love to have that Viper Smart Start installed in my car though. Sounds like a really convenient thing to have!

The remote start feature is so cool to me! Living in Canada, I hate getting in a freezing cold car so that would make drives a lot more pleasant in winter.
