Apple Camp: FREE Summer Workshops for Kids Ages 8-12

Apple is once again offering free Apple Camp workshops at their retail stores where kids ages 8 to 12 can learn to make movies or create interactive books complete with their own illustrations and sound effects. Each workshop lasts 90 minutes and ends with the Apple Camp Showcase so campers can share their finished projects.

In the iMovie workshops, campers will learn to create their own movies. They’ll storyboard ideas, shoot video, create an original soundtrack in GarageBand on an iPad, and then edit it all together in iMovie on a Mac. Meanwhile, the iBooks classes will teach kids how to draw illustrations using an iPad and how to add sound effects as well as Multi-Touch features using iBooks Author for Mac.

The first workshop sessions will begin in mid-July and will last through early August.  Unfortunately, the  stores near us have already filled their slots for both workshops. But other states still have many spots remaining. You can check to see if these events are still available in your local Apple store here

Fun for Kids This Summer: Kids Skate Free

The Kids Skate Free program for kids is back this summer – a fantastic way to get the kids move away from tv and computers and get them active! Not only does roller skating help increase muscular strength and cardio-respiratory endurance, it’s also a great tension reliever and is key to weight control.  One hour of roller skating can help burn anywhere from 330 to 600 calories!

Parents can sign up their children (minimum age of 4 years old) for the Kids Skate Free program and receive two free passes to use at the designated Kids Skate Free location. Times and dates may vary at each location, so be sure to call your participating skating center for more information.

Can’t find a participating Kids Skate Free location near you? You can even go here to print a letter and let your local skating center know about this great program and encourage them to participate too!

DIG, PLANT, GROW! – A FREE Guide to Kid-Friendly Gardening

Recent studies conducted by Cornell University have proven that gardening increases nutritional awareness and may even affect children’s vegetable consumption. This statistic, coupled with the fact that kids today spend two hours less on sports and activities per week than they did 20 years ago, makes this free guide to kid-friendly gardening, DIG, PLANT, GROW! not just a fun educational tool, but a necessary one!

I absolutely agree, getting our children outside and making them see the fruits (literally!) of their labor is a great way to teach lifelong valuable lessons and empower them to build a sustainable agricultural future!

Available in an easy-to use online PDF format, this helpful gardening guide was written by teachers Meredith Hill and Sarah Ohana with help from Ethne Clarke, Editor in Chief of Organic Gardening.  I’m so glad to be able to share this free guide to you all, my dear readers,  just in time for Summer!  You’ll never have to run out of ideas to keep your children happy on those long summer days. This free guide will teach your kids new and valuable lessons … while getting them more interested in eating their veggies along the way!
