Fun at the Museum with Frito-Lay 2Go

Making learning a fun and exciting venture for my children is very important to me. So when I learned about a new partnership between Frito-Lay 2 Go and the Association of Science-Technology Centers (ASTC) that encourage kids to be active and to explore the world through STEM – (science, technology, engineering, mathematics), I wanted to know more!

My boys love anything STEM (especially my soon to be 6th grader who is into robotics and video game designing), so I was excited to learn that we could participate in this fun, educational activity. I easily located a participating ASTC center near our home and decided to take our boys there last weekend.

So first, here’s what I learned and I’m excited to share this information with you all!

Now through June 5th, families can receive a free kid’s pass to a participating ASTC center with the purchase of Frito-Lay2Go!  To find a participating ASTC center near you, go here to locate one in your state. Be sure to call the center or museum first to confirm their participation before planning your visit.

What is ASTC and what do they do?

The Association of Science-Technology Centers (ASTC) is a global organization providing collective voice, professional support, and programming opportunities for science centers, museums, and related institutions, whose innovative approaches to science learning inspire people of all ages about the wonders and the meaning of science in their lives. Through strategic alliances and global partnerships, ASTC strives to increase awareness of the valuable contributions its members make to their communities and the field of informal STEM learning.

Our visit at The Children’s Science Center (Fair Oaks Mall) – Fairfax, Virginia

I’ve learned about the new The Children’s Science Center in Fairfax through a personal invitation from the museum when they opened last year. We couldn’t make it due to other plans, so we were thrilled to finally visit for the first time!

A museum built “for kids, by kids’’, The Children’s Science Center is a hands-on, interactive exploration center where children, families, and school groups can learn about and experience fun science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) principles.

During our visit, we enjoyed exploring the exhibits that included The Experiment Bar (where kids can order from a rotating menu of experiments that demonstrate the wonders of science through the fundamentals of biology, chemistry, physics and beyond)…

… the Inspiration Hub (where kids can explore fun, hands-on, interactive exhibits that convey real-world applications of STEM: Power the City, Catching the Wind, Chain Reaction, Gear Table, and the Keva Plank Construction Zone); and the Tinker Shop (a workshop-like space that lets kids build structures; create crafts to test in the vertical wind-tube; make art, music and more with circuits and robotics; and dissect machines and toys.

There is also a Discovery Zone designed for children aged five and under. Exhibits and activities include: Light & Shadow Play, Imagination Playground, and early hands-on science Discovery Boxes.

My kids had a lot of fun at The Children’s Science Center and I’m sure we’ll be back again in the near future! If you’re planning to visit anytime soon, note that children under 2 years old get in free but with this limited time promotion with Frito-Lay2Go, kids can get in free and adults will still have to pay the general admission of $12/person.

The experience focuses on children ages 2 and up via collaborative learning within a family or a school group. The facility is especially focused on preschool and elementary aged visitors, but also great fun for a playful, inquisitive, hands-on oriented tween, or teen. You can learn more about this science center, including the events, classes and programs they offer through their website at www.childsci.org
