Berrylicious Morning Smoothie

Berrylicious Morning Smoothie

Let’s talk about a great pick me up: my own recipe for a special breakfast berry smoothie that I call Berrylicious Morning Smoothie!  (Now, don’t laugh. I personally love the sound of ‘berrylicious’) 😉

But before I share my recipe, I just want to say that Spring is truly in the air here in Northern Virginia!  Although the weather has been a bit erratic the past couple of weeks, overall, I am loving it all! 🙂

Have you been able to plan to see the cherry blossoms in DC yet this spring? I love taking walks through our beautiful area and watch the flowers bloom, the earth come alive and really take in what nature offers us in this busy world.

Your weekend routine may be one that includes coffee, not changing out of your PJs unless there’s a soccer game, and maybe more coffee. (Hahaaa, so me!)

But, with Spring here, let’s change that. Walking paths, hikes, and visiting the many local and national parks to see the flora is something that can be come part of your weekend routine. Before you head on your morning walk to enjoy the spring air, make yourself a refreshing Berrylicious Morning Smoothie. It is easy to make, delicious, and healthy!

Berry Smoothie

Benefits of this healthy morning treat:

  • The flavonoids in berries are being linked to more benefits all the time. In fact, the flavonoids found in blueberries and strawberries, for example, are shown to help prevent weight gain!
  • Greek yogurt is heavily strained so the liquid whey and lactose is mostly removed, causing a very tangy taste. The ones with vanilla in them – so tasty!
  • Live, active cultured yogurt is great for gut health, including immune function!
  • Bananas are filling and full of potassium!

Berrylicious Morning Smoothie

  • Author: Jocelyn Brown
  • Yield: 2-3 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1/2 cup blackberries
  • 1/2 cup blueberries
  • 4 strawberries
  • 1 banana
  • 7 oz vanilla Greek yogurt
  • 1/2 cup almond milk

Instructions

  1. Wash all the berries and take the tops off the strawberries. Peel the bananas.
  2. Put all the ingredients in a blender and process until smooth.
  3. Pour into glasses and serve topped with granola if you desire. Chill leftovers in the fridge if you can’t drink all.

Notes

You can also add raspberries if you wish. For the milk, you can use what you have – skim or soy milk. For non-dairy smoothies, substitute 1 cup rice milk for the milk and yogurt. Or, use soy yogurt or milk instead of dairy.

When it comes to your morning routine, make it a healthy one! This smoothie is full of benefits, and can easily replace a more calorie dense, refined carb loaded, fake sugar option found at a drive through. Yes, the drive through is convenient, but honestly, the prep time for this smoothie is shorter than most week-day morning drive through lines. So yes, you can save time with a smoothie too! You can take a smoothie with you on your commute, have it at home, and even share the smoothie with your kids! By focusing on nutrition and taste, you can have a great start to your day. When your children eat healthy from a young age, it really becomes the norm.

Do you have a favorite morning smoothie? Tell me about it!
