What You’ll Need to Make Air Fryer Halloween Donuts

Before diving into the delightful world of creating Air Fryer Halloween Donuts, let’s make sure you have all the essential ingredients and equipment ready.

Here’s a handy list to ensure your spooky donut-making adventure goes smoothly:

Ingredients:

    • Homestyle Biscuits: Choose unbaked biscuits, as they serve as the base for your donuts.
    • Butter: Melted butter is used to brush the donuts before air frying, giving them a golden, buttery finish.
    • Icing  Multiple colors of icing are essential for adding that vibrant, Halloween-themed flair to your donuts.
    • Candy Eyes: These edible eyes add a playful and eerie touch to your donut creations.
    • Whole Milk: You’ll use this to thin out the icing and achieve the right consistency for decorating.
    • Optional: Plastic Vampire Teeth: For extra spookiness, consider adding plastic vampire teeth to your donuts to create menacing mouths.

Equipment:

  • Air Fryer: You’ll need an air fryer to perfectly cook the donuts. Ensure it’s preheated to 340 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Non-Stick Baking Spray: To prevent sticking, generously spray the air fryer basket before cooking the donuts.
  • Microwave-Safe Bowls: You’ll use these to heat and prepare the various icing colors.
  • Whisk: A whisk is essential for mixing and achieving the desired consistency when thinning out the icing.
  • Cooling Rack: A cooling rack is necessary for setting the icing on your freshly iced donuts.

With these ingredients and equipment, you’re ready to embark on your spooky donut-making journey. Let’s move on to the step-by-step instructions to bring these ghoulishly delicious treats to life!

How to Make Air Fryer Halloween Donuts

1. Preheat the Air Fryer:

Begin by preheating your air fryer to 340 degrees Fahrenheit. Ensure the air fryer basket is well-coated with non-stick baking spray to prevent any sticking during cooking.

2. Prepare the Biscuits:

Next, create the classic donut shape by carefully cutting a hole in the center of each biscuit. Arrange these donuts in a single layer inside the air fryer basket, making sure not to overcrowd it. Depending on the basket’s size, you might need to air fry the biscuit dough in batches. Remember to apply a light coating of non-stick spray between each batch to maintain an easy release.

3. Air Fry the Biscuits:

Now, it’s time to make the biscuits in the air fryer. Cook them for approximately 6 minutes or until they become beautiful golden brown. Keep a watchful eye on them to avoid overcooking.

4. Prepare the Icing:

While the donuts are in the air fryer, prepare the icing. Transfer each icing color into a microwave-safe bowl and heat them individually for 30-second intervals. This step will make the icing more pliable for decorating. After microwaving, whisk 1 tablespoon of whole milk into each bowl of icing until you reach the desired consistency.

5. Ice the Donuts:

After the donuts are finished cooking and have cooled slightly, it’s time to ice them. Dip the top of each donut into your preferred colored icing, allowing any excess to drip off. Place the iced donuts on a cooling rack, allowing the icing to set until it stops dripping but remains slightly soft to the touch.

6. Get Creative with Decoration:

Now for the fun part – decorating your spooky donuts! Use the candy eyes and the small icing tubes to bring your donuts to life. Let your creativity flow, crafting faces, spider webs, or any other Halloween-themed designs that strike your fancy. For an extra touch of spookiness, consider pressing the optional plastic vampire teeth into the center of the donuts to create menacing mouths, and add some red icing for the fangs. Enjoy the process of transforming your delicious donuts into edible works of Halloween art!

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I eat spooky donuts, warm or cold?

When the icing has hardened, and you’ve done your decorating, the donuts will likely still be just a tiny bit warm. In my opinion, this is the best time to enjoy them. Otherwise, they should be enjoyed at room temperature. So, if you have been storing them in the fridge, let them sit on the countertop before diving in.

Do I have to use store-bought icing, or can I make my own?

You are more than welcome to use homemade icing. Just be sure that you can heat it up and thin it out with milk. Otherwise, it won’t glaze the donuts smoothly and evenly.

Do I have to buy store-bought biscuit dough?

Honestly, yes. I am all for homemade in most cases, but this recipe is best with store-bought biscuit dough.

Can I make this ahead of time and freeze it?

You can. Allow the frosted and decorated donuts to cool to room temperature before arranging them in a single layer in an airtight container. Store them in the freezer for up to 1 month. Let the donuts thaw at room temperature before serving.

Alternatively, you can store the unfrosted, air-fried biscuits in an airtight container. They will stay good in the freezer for up to one month. When ready to enjoy, prepare the icing as you allow the biscuits to thaw at room temperature. Then, all that’s left to do is ice, decorate, and serve.

What size is the hole in the center? What did you use to make it?

The holes in the biscuit dough should be roughly 1 inch in circumference. I used an icing cap to make mine, but you could use a bottle cap or something similar. A paring knife and a steady hand would also do the trick.

Can I make this in an oven instead of an air fryer?

You can! Make a hole in each biscuit and, instead of air frying, bake them in the oven as per the instructions on the package of biscuit dough.

Can I line the air fryer with parchment paper?

Great question! The answer is no. Air fryers work by circulating hot air in a small space. Putting parchment paper between the basket and the biscuit dough will restrict air flow and disrupt the cooking process. So stick with non-stick baking spray.

How do I store these air fryer donuts?

Allow the donuts to cool completely before transferring them to an airtight container. I suggest storing them in a single layer so as not to smudge the decorations. They will keep at room temperature for up to 2 days or in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.

These Air Fryer Spooky Donuts are a delicious treat and a fantastic activity for the whole family to enjoy together. Whether you’re hosting a Halloween party or want to get into the spooky spirit, these donuts are the perfect addition to your festivities. So, roll up your sleeves, fire up that air fryer, and let your imagination run wild as you create your own edible works of Halloween art. Happy Halloween!

Air Fryer Halloween Donuts

  • Author: Jocelyn Brown
  • Prep Time: 15 minutes + Cooling Time 10 minutes
  • Cook Time: 6 minutes
  • Total Time: 31 minutes
  • Yield: 8 donuts 1x

Description

Whip up spooky Air Fryer Halloween Donuts made with homestyle biscuits, colorful icing, and candy eyes. Perfect for a frightfully fun celebration!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 homestyle biscuits, unbaked
  • ¼ cup butter, melted
  • ½ cup each of purple, orange, green, and chocolate icing
  • 3 tablespoons of each of white, black, and red icing
  • 2 tablespoons each large, medium, and small candy eyes
  • 1/4 cup whole milk, divided
  • Optional- plastic vampire teeth

Instructions

  1. Prep the air fryer. Preheat the air fryer to 340 degrees F and spray the basket with non-stick baking spray.
  2. Prepare the biscuits. Cut a hole in the center of each biscuit and arrange them in a single layer in the basket of the air fryer. Brush the biscuits with butter.

NOTE: It is important not to crowd the air fryer here. So you might have to air fry the biscuit dough in batches. Spray with non-stick spray between each batch.

  1. Air fry the biscuits. Air fry the biscuits for 6 minutes.
  2. Make the icing. Transfer each color of icing to its own microwave safe bowl and heat, one at a time, for 30 seconds in the microwave. Whisk 1 tablespoon whole milk into each icing to thin it out.
  3. Ice the donuts. Dip the top of each donut in the color/s of your choosing. Arrange them on a cooling rack and set aside until the icing stops dripping but is still a bit soft.
  4. Decorate. Decorate each donut with the eyes and the small tubes of icing. I like making faces and spider webs on mine but get as creative as you’d like to. Alternate eye sizes and use random patterns in the icing as facial features. You can press the vampire teeth into the center of the donuts to create a mouth and then add red icing on the fangs.
