Holiday Entertaining On A Budget with my $50 ALDI Supermarket Gift Card
I used to shop regularly at ALDI supermarket when I used to live in Houston, Texas. I can say that they have great prices on household and grocery items compared to the other leading grocery stores.
Recently, Hip Mama's Place was chosen by Mom Central to participate in a new blog campaign for ALDI supermarket to check out their award-winning wine selections. I, of course, gladly accepted. My husband and I are wine and cheese lovers and the $50 ALDI gift card to purchase the wines sounded like a good excuse to taste new wines (and a nice holiday gift at that! Thanks, Mom Central)!
Although I now rarely go to the ALDI supermarket in my area (because it's not as easily accessible from our house), I really like shopping there. It's clean and well-organized and finding the stuff I need is very easy. I was amazed at the wide selection of wines in this store. Armed with the ALDI wine list I got from Mom Central, I purchased the following wines:
-Villa Malizia Pinot Grigio (Italy) - if you like the flavors of peach and pear and the aroma of flowers and honeysuckle when you drink your wine, this is a great choice! My husband and I loved this wine and will definitely purchase it again. Retail price at ALDI's: only $4.99
-Walker Napa Valley Red Wine (California)- a blend of Merlot, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon, this wine is perfect to have with pasta or barbeque. And for only $7.99, you can't beat it!
- Landshut Reisling (Germany)- this white wine has a tangy orange zest with a slight mineral finish and aromas of mild lemon butter cream, pistachio nougat and peach jam. A great accompaniment to a variety of foods, including Asian, Indian and German-style dishes. Retail price at ALDI's: only $4.99
- Toca Diamonte Malbec (Argentina)- this one of top new fave wine from ALDI's: it's soft and silky with a fruity-yet-dry medium body. We paired this with grilled chicken for dinner the other night and it was perfect! Retails for $4.99 at ALDI.
And may I mention, all of the above listed wines are winners to the 2011 Beverage Testing Institute World Wine Challenge. Wow, I was truly impressed!
Since I still have $27 left after purchasing the above four wines, I also got these to accompany our wines:
edenVale Brie Cheese- $2.99
Happy Farms Cheese Cubes- bought two @ $1.99 each
Savoritz Six Cracker Assortment- $2.49 each
Belmont Premium Cheesecake Sampler- $9.99 (yummy!)
I had an OMG! moment when I got to the checkout counter. I can't believe how much stuff I got for under $50! All in all, I am very pleased with my shopping experience. The sales people and cashiers at the ALDI store in my area are all pleasant and helpful.
Tonight, we're having our family Christmas party over at my parents in law's house and we are bringing two of the wines and cheesecake from ALDI to the party.
On a budget this holiday season? Go to your closest ALDI supermarket today! Most stores are open on Christmas Eve until 4:00 PM so you still have time to grab those award-winning wines and delicious cheeses!
From ALDI and Hip Mama's Place, MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A BLESSED NEW YEAR 2012!

NEW in the Market: Giada De Laurentiis for Target Line of Specialty Food Items, Cookware, Bakeware and Kitchen Tools
One of the things I love about the holidays is the fun I always have whenever I get together with my family and friends. There is something about the festive spirit and warmth of the season that draws people closer together. Even loved ones who are far really find the time and the means to get together with everyone. Which for our family- that also means, LOTS of food!
I love to cook and bake and decorate holiday cookies and believe it or not, since this month started, I have already been to three different holiday parties with my family and friends. So I have been super busy in the kitchen preparing our favorite holiday dishes and baking sweet goodies. :)
And that's why I was so thrilled when I got introduced to the Giada De Laurentiis for Target collection of specialty food items, cookware, bakeware and kitchen tools. Wow! Just what I need with all the cooking I've been doing and will still do for our upcoming family Christmas eve party.
Here are a few products from the Giada De Laurentiis for Target collection I was lucky to have tested so far:
These really came in at the right time as I was telling my husband that I needed to get new kitchen tools as most of the ones I have are getting old and really needed replaced. So receiving these items is like getting an early gift from my husband! (Except that I got them free! Thanks, Mom Central!) These are high quality cookware, bakeware and kitchen tools that are perfect for my everyday cooking and entertaining at home.
I have always been a huge Giada De Laurentiis fan on the Food Network. Her delish recipes are easy to make and just watching her loveliness and her passion for cooking on tv make me want to be a great chef in my own kitchen too! But now, to actually use the products that she endorse herself, now that's something.
The package I received also contained these yummy specialty food items: Giada De Laurentiis for Target Marinated Sun Dried Tomatoes, Marinated Roasted Red Peppers, Marinated Mushrooms, Genovese Basil Pesto and Eggplant & Pepper Pesto. These are great for those guests who pop-in unexpectedly. Just serve these with toasted bread or crackers in a festive tray and voilà, you got instant appetizers to enjoy while waiting for the main dish!
We also got to try Giada's Blend Ground Coffee, which I also used in my Spiced Coffee with Cinnamon Whipped Cream recipe, courtesy of Giada De Laurentiis. My husband and I are coffee lovers and when I made this delicious coffee treat the first time, he couldn't believe I actually made it. We love it so much that I wanted to share this simple recipe with you all, my dear readers!
Spiced Coffee with Cinnamon Whipped Cream
• 1 cup granulated sugar
• ¼ tsp ground allspice
• ¼ tsp of ground cinnamon, plus more for dusting
• ¼ tsp ground ginger
• 1 cup boiling water
• 1 cup brewed Giada De Laurentiis for Target Giada Blend Coffee
• 1 cup heavy cream
• 2 tbsp confectioners’ sugar
1. In a small sauce pan combine the granulated sugar and ½ cup of water. Bring to a boil over medium heat and reduce heat to low.
2. Add allspice, cinnamon and ginger. Simmer for 5 minutes or until sugar is dissolved.
3. Take the pan off the heat and set aside.
4. In a heat proof pitcher or measuring cup add the boiling water to the coffee /espresso. Divide it among four 6 to 8 oz cups.
5. Add 2 tablespoons of the spiced syrup to each cup and stir to combine.
6. Using an electric mixer with a whisk attachment beat the heavy cream until soft peaks form. Add confectioners’ sugar and continue to beat until stiff.
7. Top each with a dollop of whipped cream – dust with cinnamon and add cinnamon stick.
Yield: 4 servings/ 4 (6-8 oz) cups; Prep Time: 10 minutes; Cook Time: 7 minutes
For our upcoming family Christmas eve party, I'd really like to try and make Giada's other recipes, such as the Chicken Cacciatore and Hazelnut Crunch Cake woth Mascarpone and Chocolate for dessert (my mouth is watering while I'm typing these words).. mmm, mmm.. they look and sound delish! :)
Finally, I'd like to share some helpful entertaining tips from Giada De Laurentiis that I know busy moms like you and me could use with the holiday stress now on the rise. After all, there are only six days left before Christmas!
• Plan ahead! Prepare most of your dishes ahead of time, rather than trying to cook everything at once. You’ll feel less stressed and will be able to enjoy the party. Giada recommends leaving only one item for last minute prep – this brings everyone into the kitchen and sets the tone for a cozy, comfortable evening.
• Don’t overdo your menu – keep it simple! As a general rule, Giada suggests offering four to five appetizers. During the holidays, choose foods that have vibrant colors for an added festive touch. Also select foods that are beautiful to serve and easy for guests to eat.

Honeydrop Beverages Review + 10 Easy Ways to Fight Off Winter Colds
A few days ago, we took our four year old Jaden to the doctor because he was sniffling and coughing a lot. We expected his doctor to recommend at least a children's cough syrup to treat his coughing. But instead, all the doctor said was that Jaden's coughing wasn't so bad and that the best way to treat it naturally is to stir honey in his drinking water and it should just go away after a few days. Wow, I didn't know honey is a good alternative to children's cough syrup! So we did what the doctor recommended and sure enough, after this past weekend, Jaden's coughing was almost gone!
Which leads me to this post. Do you know that honey has a lot of health benefits? They contain vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, has both antibacterial and antimicrobial properties, is unrefined and is lower on the glycemic index than most sweeteners? For these reasons, honey has also been proven to help restore tired muscles after strenuous exercises, helps to heal wounds, and yes, a more effective cough syrup for children than leading cough syrups!
Recently, I was also introduced to a new, natural line of teas and juices called Honeydrop that contains a spoonful of honey in every bottle. What's great about this drink is that it is healthy, low-calorie and contains no refined or artificial sweeteners. I have been really picky with what I drink now as my family has a history of diabetes and I cannot drink anything with a lot of sugars or artificial sweeteners so this comes really handy for me! Plus, the taste is really great! I am loving the Lemon Tea and Blueberry flavors! I'm going to go to my health food store this week and buy more of these yummy drinks for sure!
Honeydrop beverages come in three varieties: Delicious Juices, Fresh-Brewed Teas and Herbal Teas and six delicious flavors. You can find them at most health food stores like Whole Foods Market, Mom's Organic Market and online at Honeydrop.com. Retail cost: $22.00 for a pack of 12 (14 oz) glass bottles.
'Tis the season of sneezing and sniffling, so I thought I'd share these very healthful tips from Honeydrop:
10 Easy Ways to Fight Off Winter Colds:
·Rest: Having a slightly less hectic day just won’t cut it. Your body needs lots of rest. Drop the laptop, skip the happy hour and forget the chores. Save your energy so your body can fight the cold.
·Drink Plenty of Fluids: Drinking fluids will help loosen congestion and keep you hydrated. You’ll need more fluids then usual so keep a fresh cup of tea, bottle of water or favorite juice handy at all times.
·Add Honey To Your Diet: Honey is an immune system builder as it has antioxidants help fight disease. Drop a teaspoon of honey in your tea or try a tea or juice with honey already added. A great option is one of Honeydrop Beverages Lemon Honey Ginger tea. It contains 100% Vitamin C and is void of all refined or artificial sweeteners.
·Use a Compress: Hot or cold compresses work great for relieving sinus pressure. Make your own with a microwaved damp washcloth (50 seconds does the trick) or use a pack of frozen veggies.
·Take a Hot Shower: The warm steam will moisturize your nasal passages to making breathing easier and more comfortable. Plus, a hot shower will relax you!
·Blow Your Nose Correctly: It’s not just about “getting the gunk out”. Blowing too hard can rupture an eardrum or cause an earache. To make sure you are blowing your nose correctly, hold one finger over one nostril and gently blow.
·Wash Your Hands Often: During cold season, it’s not enough to just squeeze in a hand washing before exiting the restroom. Wash your hands before meals, after blowing your nose, after making contact with others and after leaving public areas. Don’t forget to clean under your fingernails too! Lots of germs get stuck there.
·Replace Your Toothbrush: Your toothbrush can be a breeding ground for germs so while cold season is in full swing replace your toothbrush monthly. After a cold, immediately toss that germy toothbrush for a fresh start!
·Keep Stress in Check: Your body will have a much easier time fighting off a winter cold without stress weighing you down. Eliminate stressful activities from your schedule and make time for things that relax and calm you. Yoga, reading, watching a comedy and listening to peaceful music are all great options.
·Get Some Sun: Without sunlight, Vitamin D levels drop significantly in your body, which reduces immunity. If you cannot get a daily dose of sun, try Vitamin D pills as a substitute. Here’s 10 Easy Ways to Fight Off Winter Colds:

I found this really neat, fun and inexpensive Christmas craft idea from MarthaStewart.com that I did with my kids a few weekends ago: glittering up some dollar store plastic deer as cute table decorations! They look soooo adorable I thought I'd share!
My boys had real fun making these cuties!
When we were done, we added the glittered deers to our little Christmas village that we set up below the fireplace... they look soooo gorgeous I can't stop admiring my kids' work! :)
So here's how to make them!
Tools and Materials:
Plastic deer, from a craft or toy store
Small paintbrush
White glue
Powder glitter
Bowl
Glittered Deer How-To:
1. Hold a toy deer by one leg; use a paintbrush to coat head, body, and other three legs with a thin, even layer of white glue.
2. Spoon glitter onto deer; gently shake excess into bowl. Let dry.
3. Repeat process on last leg; touch up bare spots by dabbing them with glue and spooning on more glitter.
If you can't find plastic deer toys at the dollar store, try your local Michael's and Jo-Ann's craft stores too. I couldn't find them at my local craft stores so I went to Etsy and got them at $5 for 6 pieces. I love this Christmas craft idea!
Enjoy crafting with your kids! :)

The Cooking Light Gluten-Free Cookbook - Review and Giveaway + Gluten-Free Streusel Muffins Recipe
If you have a child who suffers from food allergies, you know how he or she usually misses out on favorites like pizza and trail mix. But now your child doesn't have to! Here's The Cooking Light Gluten-Free Cookbook - a wonderful cookbook that helps busy moms like you and me serve up to 150 safe, scrumptious, and kid-friendly recipes that everyone can enjoy!
The Cooking Light Gluten-Free Cookbook is a complete culinary guide that offers a glossary of common gluten-free ingredients, lots of helpful advice for avoiding hidden gluten, and other valuable cooking and baking tips.
Here's one yummy recipe I got off of The Cooking Light Gluten-Free Cookbook that my kids have enjoyed. I'm sure you and your kids will love these too!
Cinnamon-Raisin Muffins with Streusel Topping
Streusel:
1⁄4 cup chopped walnuts
1⁄4 cup packed light brown sugar
2 tablespoons brown rice flour (such as Bob’s Red Mill)
1⁄2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
11⁄2 tablespoons canola oil or
butter
Muffins:
Cooking spray
3.3 ounces brown rice flour (about
3⁄4 cup; such as Bob’s Red Mill)
4.1 ounces potato starch (about
3⁄4 cup)
2.1 ounces tapioca flour (about
1⁄2 cup)
3⁄4 cup granulated sugar
1 tablespoon baking powder
11⁄2 teaspoons xanthan gum
1⁄2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1⁄2 teaspoon salt
3⁄4 cup raisins
1⁄4 cup chopped toasted walnuts
1⁄3 cup canola oil
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 large eggs
1 cup plain soy milk
Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 400°.
2. To prepare streusel, combine first 5 ingredients in a small bowl with a fork until mixture resembles small peas.
3. To prepare muffins, place 18 paper muffin cup liners in muffin cups. Coat liners with cooking spray; set aside.
4. Weigh or lightly spoon brown rice flour, potato starch, and tapioca flour into dry measuring cups; level with a knife. Combine brown rice flour, potato starch, tapioca flour, granulated sugar, and next 4 ingredients in a large bowl, stirring with a whisk. Stir in raisins and walnuts; make a well in center of mixture. Combine oil, vanilla, and eggs in a medium bowl, stirring with a whisk. Stir in soy milk; add to rice flour mixture, stirring just until moist. Spoon batter evenly into prepared muffin cups. Sprinkle batter evenly with streusel topping.
5. Bake at 400° for 20 minutes or until muffins are lightly browned and spring back when touched lightly in center. Cool in pans 5 minutes on a wire rack. Serve warm. Yield: 18 servings (serving size: 1 muffin).

Are you Budget-Challenged This Holiday Season? Shop at Family Dollar Store
With the holidays just right around the corner, we got plenty of shopping to do for our loved ones. If you're anything like me who's on a constant challenge of sticking to your budget, you try and find the best deals possible. Who doesn't love finding bargains? I feel great when I know I've stretched my dollar to its fullest!
Thanks to Mom Central, I was picked to check out the local Family Dollar store with a $50 gift card so I can hunt for great deals! I admit, I haven't been to this store in a while and I needed a few things for the house such as cleaning products, foil paper, gift bags and wrapping papers for my holiday gifts. To my surprise, our Family Dollar Store also offers many other things such as home decor, scented candles, holiday trimmings, kitchen utensils, bathroom items, toys and even clothing for the whole family! So besides the cleaning products and gift wrapping papers and gift bags I needed, I was able to get more stuff with my $50 gift card. I got my kids more boxed crayons and wooden puzzles and I also got my husband a bottle of shaving cream and razors.
Oh, wow! The Family Dollar Store really do have some fantastic deals that you won't find in regular retail stores. With the purchase I made, I was able to save and cut back on many things I needed for the holiday season, plus more! I was really amazed at how much stuff I got with my $50 gift card! Also, I checked out their ads and right now, their entire stock of holiday decor and trimmings are 25% OFF! Hmmm, might go back there for more gift wrapping papers and gift bags for next year.
On a limited budget this holiday season? Try and go check out your local Family Dollar store today! You'll never know what you'll find!
Hip Mama's Place Disclosure: “I wrote this review while participating in a blog tour by Mom Central Consulting on behalf of Family Dollar and received a gift card to facilitate my review and a promotional item to thank me for taking the time to participate.”
