An Afternoon Lab Experiment with Wisk Stain Spectrum Technology Laundry Detergent: Fighting Protein Stains

As part of my involvement with the Wisk Laundry Detergent project, I was given the task of experiencing first-hand how the new Wisk Stain Spectrum™ Technology works to fight protein stains on clothing.

Dubbing myself scientist for the afternoon and enlisting my five year old Gabriel to be my willing assistant, we tackled this "exciting little Science project" (had to use this phrase to get him excited about it- which by the way, worked really well!) yesterday afternoon. Plus, he was really thrilled about wearing his lab coat and goggles! :)


Unfortunately, our house didn't come with a Science lab when we bought it, so we settled our small play/work table on our lovely patio- which was a perfect place for our Saturday afternoon (Science) project. :)

So anyway... first, let's talk about protein stains.

Protein stains come in many forms, such as eggs, baby formula, spinach and the one moms are all most familiar with that show up on the knee of our kids' favorite pants- grass stains!

THE EXPERIMENT:

For this project, we were provided the following tools: protein-stained swatch (the green square cloth in the photos), plastic beaker, lab coat, dropping pipette, goggles and a red-hot bottle of Wisk® Laundry Detergent!

To show you all how the Wisk with Stain Spectrum™ Technology worked in fighting the protein stains, I had Gabriel write his initials on the protein-stain swatch with the help of the dropping pipette, as shown in this photo:


Well, you're all supposed to read the initials: GD here, but it ended up looking like a messy doodle. :)

So.. we waited for a few seconds to allow Wisk with Stain Spectrum™ Technology to work before our very eyes.


Then, we placed the swatch in the plastic beaker filled with warm water and swished it around a little bit.



THE RESULTS OF THE EXPERIMENT:

When Gabriel and I took out the soaked protein-stained swatch from the warm water-filled beaker, I was impressed! Wow. Remember the initial doodles Gabriel wrote on the protein-stained swatch using Wisk with Stain Spectrum™ Technology? The protein stains on those sections of the swatch completely disappeared! Vanished. No more.


As you can see in this last photo, the water turned green which shows that the protein stains were completely eliminated from the swatch. Amazing!



MY THOUGHTS:

After performing this experiment, the new Wisk with Stain Spectrum™ Technology completely changed the way I look at clothing stains forever! This stuff is really powerful in eliminating stains. Personally, I think Wisk has really got it down to a science when it comes to fighting all kinds of stains. Now, those pesky "ring around the collar" stains are even easier to eliminate, which before- was a real challenge for me. No more grass stains on my kids' favorite pants either! Plus, with a price tag that's so affordable ($5.99 for 50 fl oz. Wisk bottles that cleans 32 loads), I just can't go wrong with it!

6 Fun Tips for a Fit Family

The following article is contributed by Tara Zimliki, fitness expert and founder of Tara’s Boot Camp in Branchburg, New Jersey that teaches people every day how to maintain healthier lifestyles, no matter what their age or fitness level.

The new school year is quickly approaching, which means less downtime for kids and more stress for parents. To make matters worse cutbacks in physical education, increased academic pressures, and ever-growing portion sizes in restaurants and at home are making families increasingly overweight. But who says you can’t make more time for the family and squeeze in a decent workout? The trick is to do both at the same time.


Try these strategies to get your family moving – this fall and all year-round:

·Start young. Tara advises parents to get kids moving early in life which will promote healthy development and keep sedentary habits at bay. Even your toddler needs at least 30 minutes of structured physical activity every day, and should not sit still for more than an hour at a time.

·Set realistic goals. Not all children are star athletes. But keep in mind that your child may have never been given the chance to shine. You can help by being realistic about your child’s physical ability. For some kids, even a jog around the block can seem intimidating. “Running ability is mostly mental,” says Tara, “it’s important to keep your child motivated by breaking down each goal, step by step.”

·Get animated. Running doesn’t have to be boring! Get creative with your workout. Form a conga line and play follow the leader. Flap your arms whenever you see a stop sign. Try running while hopping, pumping your arms, playing air guitar — whatever you and your kids can dream up!

·Be a cheerleader. A recent study of 200 students in grades 2 through 11 showed that kids of all ages want their parents to help them stay active. Cheer them on frequently and show your child that activity is a priority every day. Tara says to make sure your children know that you would never be disappointed with their performance. “Remember, this is both a workout and a bonding activity,” says Tara.

·Use community resources. Your family run doesn’t have to be confined to your block. Keep it interesting by visiting different parks or neighborhoods other than your own. You can also check out whether your child's school, or a local university or community center, offers an indoor or outdoor track for public use.

·Be vigilant. Although a family jog provides a convenient way for you to get out the door and run, the advantages don’t come without risks to your child. Try to avoid running at night when visibility is limited. “Your exercise should be satisfying and safe for both you and your new companions,” advises Tara. Also, leave distractions at home – including the iPod and the dog. Make this time simply about you and your kin.

Avocados, The "Big Hit" Avocado League and My Very Own Summer Avocado Salsa Recipe

Avocados are just so delicious and nutritious and make great and healthy ingredient in any dish! Don't you agree?

I especially love avocados on salads and sandwiches! Plus, according to the United States Department of Agriculture- Agricultural Research Service (USDA-ARS), avocados are loaded with vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients that are beneficial to our health in so many ways. They're great antioxidants, contains only 50 calories per ounce (around three slices) and has zero sodium and cholesterol.


Which leads me to my next point about this very healthy fruit.

You know, with baseball playoffs and football season just around the corner, I thought about making some cool game-day snacks made with avocados. And I came up with... ta-da! My very own "Summer Avocado Salsa" recipe to serve with nachos and tortilla chips on game day! And I have a special name for it: "SUMMER IN DC" AVOCADO SALSA! :)

I'm honestly not a real pro when it comes to making up my own recipe but you all gotta give it to me on this one. Yes, I worked so hard to come up with this recipe and I was so thrilled this salsa turned out absolutely delicious! Light, wonderfully refreshing and just perfect for summer or game-day snacking!

"SUMMER IN DC" AVOCADO SALSA

Prep Time: 30 Minutes
Ready In: 8 Hours 30 Minutes
Servings: About 30

Ingredients:

1 (16 ounce) package frozen corn kernels, thawed
2 (2.25 ounce) cans sliced ripe olives, drained
1 can of black beans, rinsed
2 Roma tomatoes, chopped
1 small onion, chopped
1/2 small sweet onion, chopped
5 cloves garlic, minced
1/3 cup olive oil
1/4 cup lime juice or lemon juice
3 tablespoons cider vinegar
1 teaspoon dry red pepper
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
4 avocados - peeled, pitted and diced

Directions:

1. In a large bowl, combine corn, olives, black beans, Roma tomatoes and onions. Mix well.
2. In a separate bowl, mix together garlic, olive oil, lime juice, cider vinegar, dry red pepper, oregano, salt and black pepper. Pour this mixture into the corn mixture and toss to coat. Cover and chill in the refrigerator overnight or for at least 8 hours.
3. Stir the diced avocados into the mixture and serve!

Better Oats Oat Revolution Peaches & Cream Instant Oatmeal Review

August is National Peach Month and Better Oats Oat Revolution has recently introduced their own Peaches & Cream instant oatmeal that's made with real peaches!


We recently received a box of the new Better Oats Oat Revolution Peaches & Cream Instant Oatmeal to try. My kids love oatmeal for breakfast and since I am trying to eat lighter these days, this oatmeal is just perfect! Just like the brand claims- this oatmeal tasted sweet, creamy and yes, you can really taste real peaches. Why, it has real peaches in it! And it has a natural texture to it too- not at all mushy. Thick, delicious and old-fashioned oats but still fast enough to prepare for those hurried days... what's not to like? :)

Thank God for a wonderful, early start to the day. Hmmm, actually.. way too early for a start to the day.

I woke up at 5:00 A.M. today. That's just way too early, isn't it? I know a lot of people are natural-born early risers. LOL, I'm not. Soon as I decided I'm not really sleeping anymore this morning, I glanced at the alarm clock by the bedside and saw that it was only 3:40 A.M. Ugh. Way too early! So I tried to go back to sleep. But I just kept tossing and turning in bed. I didn't want to wake Dan up. Too bad for my sweety. He's going to have a long day ahead of him at work today.

So... here I am... posting on my blog at 5:34 A.M. I guess it's a good thing. Last week, I was crazy mad busy with errands and projects for my upcoming wedding. I was trying not to be a complete spazz but last week was one of those. I was way too occupied to even post for my Tuesday Giveaway Roundup here last week. I apologize.
