Easy-to-make Valentine Cookies

This Valentine's Day, make it even sweeter for your kids with this easy Valentine cookie recipe from NickJr Recipes.

Servings: Yields 48 servings
Prep Time: 15 minutes
Cooking Time: 10 minutes

Ingredients:

2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. baking powder
1 cup butter, softened
1 1/2 cups white sugar
1 egg
1 tsp. vanilla extract
Red sugar sprinkles
Red Hot candies

Step 1
Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). In a small bowl, kids can help stir together flour, baking soda, and baking powder. Set aside.

Step 2
In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until it is smooth. (Parents may want to start this step and let kids finish.) Beat in the egg and vanilla. Have kids gradually add in the dry ingredients while you are mixing.

Step 3
Show kids how to roll rounded teaspoonfuls of dough into balls and place them onto ungreased cookie sheets. Bake 8 to 10 minutes or until golden. Let the cookies stand two minutes before removing them from the cookie sheets to cool on wire racks.

Step 4
When the cookies have cooled, it's time to start decorating! Brush on red and white Valentine Cookie Icing using craft brushes, added red-hot candies, and sprinkled on red sugar sprinkles.

Step 5

Help kids cut out small folded paper hearts to use as decorating templates. Gently press the heart templates onto the cookies after icing, and then sprinkle on the red sugar sprinkles. Shake off excess sugar before removing the templates. (Parents may need to help remove the heart templates.) Kids can experiment and come up with their own designs to turn their cookies into edible works of art.

Share My Inauguration Story: The DC24 Kids

Most of us have witnessed President Elect Barack Obama's inauguration on Tuesday. We've heard or read about stories of people from different parts of the nation and how they travelled to Washington DC just to witness this once-in-lifetime event.

The story of the DC 24 Kids is especially touching. This group of 24 Chicago inner-city fifth and six graders traveled to DC to witness the inauguration, sponsored by the McCormick Foundation.

For the first time in eight years, the DC24 Kids will experience a governmental transition. For many this has proved to be a historical event on par with JFK's election or the first man walking on the moon.

Over one million people watched President Elect Obama take the Oath of Office on Tuesday, and the DC 24 kids were in the crowd.

The DC 24 kids attend Frazier Preparatory Academy in downtown Chicago and this trip to Washington D.C. is the first time many of them have traveled outside their neighborhood. The children have been blogging and v-logging about their experiences and sharing their poignant impressions:

"I dreamed about it last night. I'm so excited to see our first African American president."
-- Nia, 5th grade

"I can't believe we are in Washington D.C. This is like a dream and I don't want the day to end. The hotel is like something from a movie. All I could say was, 'Man, we have stepped up!'"
-- Davion, 6th grade

"I have seen so many people representing Obama so that tells me that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s dream has finally come true."
-- Tehavis, 6th grade

Don't you just feel the enthusiasm and sheer excitement bubbling through these children?

Healthy Ideas from Stop & Shop

To help consumers make healthier choices when choosing food items to buy at the grocery store, Stop & Shop Supermarket is launching Healthy Ideas-- a new on-shelf symbol that helps customers easily identify foods that fit into a healthy lifestyle.

To take the guesswork out of making healthy food choices, Stop & Shop has placed the Healthy Ideas symbol on more than 3,000 items and shelf tags throughout its stores. The symbol highlights foods that have less fat, saturated fat and sodium. It also helps to ensure that the foods we select include a healthful amount of at least one nutrient, such as fiber, whole grains, calcium and minerals.

The power of Healthy Ideas lies in the strength of its criteria which was developed by a team of registered dietitians and reviewed by an advisory panel of physicians and nutrition experts, including Dr. George Blackburn, associate director of the Division of Nutrition at Harvard Medical School. Research played a critical role in the development of the symbol, which uses the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, the USDA Food Pyramid (Mypyramid.gov) and the USDA/FDA's definition of healthy as a basis for its foundation.

Ways To Celebrate Martin Luther King Day

Looking for ways to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day in 2009? Look no further. Below is a list of ideas for parents or teachers to do with kids in honor of Dr. King's birthday.

*Listen to music from King’s time.
This is a wonderful way to connect with the voices and sentiments of the civil rights movement. Try these CDs:

We Shall Overcome, The Seeger Sessions, Bruce Springsteen

We Shall Overcome: History of the Civil Rights Movement as It Happened (book with two audio CDs), by Herb Boyd, Ossie Davis, Ruby Dee

Voices of the Civil Rights Movement: Black American Freedom Songs 1960-1966

*Go online.
There are a number of websites that bring King’s achievements alive through slideshows, video and recordings of his speeches. Check out:

The Seattle Times: MP3s of his most famous speeches, quizzes, a civil rights movement photo tour

Time.com: Photo-essay of well-known photographs of King during the heyday of the civil rights movement in the 50s and 60s

Western Michigan University: A timeline of the civil rights movement that includes many photographs and is terrific for young children

*Take in a parade.

Many cities (including New York, Los Angeles, and Dallas) as well as smaller towns across the country hold parades on Martin Luther King Jr Day. They offer an opportunity to talk to kids about the groups marching in the parade and what the marchers are commemorating.

*Volunteer.

King encouraged everyone to participate in civic life as much as possible, so a wonderful way to honor him is to use the day to give back to the community. To find family-friendly volunteer opportunities in your area, check with your local religious group, community center, or YMCA, or search online at Volunteermatch.org and USAfreedomcorps.gov (enter your zip code and area of interest for each).

*Visit King’s home.
If you’re in the Atlanta area, you can tour King’s birth home, family church, and a museum dedicated to his life and teachings. Admission is free; for more information go to Thekingcenter.org.

What To Do With Your Kids' Art

If you've been trying to figure out what to do with all of your kids' art, here are some tried-and-true classic strategies and ideas from FamilyFun.com

*Put your child's favorites in a 3-ring binder or top-loading scrapbook. You can also take same-size sheets of paper to an office supply store and have them turn the stack into a spiral-bound book.

*Use a clean pizza box to safely store items flat.

*Hang the art in a way that makes it easy to switch the old for the new:
1. Tack a clothesline to the wall, and use clothespins to hang artwork on the line.
2. Mount a curtain rod to the wall and use curtain clips to hold the art.
3. Attach a piece of metal sheeting to the wall to make a "fridge door" that's dedicated solely to artwork.

*Slip the artwork under the top of a glass-topped table.

*Scan art into the computer and use the images as your screen saver -- or use them as an ongoing slideshow in a digital photo frame.

*Reuse art you're ready to get rid of. Wrap gifts and make cards with it. Or create packing material and confetti by running colorful pieces through a shredder.

Truvia™ Natural Sweetener

To start the New Year off right, why not try and make changes in your eating choices for better health? How about changing your regular sweeteners to a natural, zero-calorie alternative?

Introducing Truvia™ natural sweetener- a sweet little something that satisfies your cravings without adding calories. Truvia™ is a stevia-based, zero-calorie sweetener made with the best tasting part of the stevia plant.

Stevia is a shrub in the chrysanthemum family that is native to northeastern Paraguay. First discovered by the country's natives, the plant has been grown, harvested and used in South America to sweeten foods and beverages for more than 200 years. Truvia™ rebiana, the main ingredient in Truvia™ natural sweetner, comes from the best-tasting part of the stevia leaf and is a high-purity sweetener that is consistent in quality and taste. Cargill has spent the past five years developing the product to its specifications and working to produce the ingredient on a commercial scale and the FDA recently approved its safety.

I have tried using Truvia™ in my coffee and it does have a wonderfully sweet taste to it. And of course, I like the fact that it has zero calories, zero fat, and zero sodium!

Truvia™ comes in convenient boxes of 40, 80, and 140 count single-serve packets and are now available at your local Whole Foods Market and other grocery stores nationwide!

Toddler Picky Eaters Are Normal

Do you have a toddler who is a picky eater?

According to Sal Severe, PhD, author of How to Behave So Your Preschooler Will Too! (Viking, 2002), it's quite normal for toddlers to go through a finicky-eating phase for emotional, development, and physical reasons. Not surprisingly, 95 percent of picky eaters are between the ages of 2 and 4. Here are some of the reasons children often become picky eaters at this stage:

1. Little children thrive on routine and are sometimes fearful of new people or experiences. All those new tastes, textures, and smells can be overwhelming to a toddler, so he's less likely to try an unfamiliar food.

2. Refusing food is a toddler's way of declaring her independence. As your child becomes mobile and reaches more developmental milestones, she gains a sense of her own capabilities and starts to have more opinions about what she wants to do and where she wants to go. It's a common struggle between children and their parents -- kids at this age are testing the world around them, and the dinner table is no exception, notes Loraine Stern, MD, an associate clinical professor of pediatrics at the University of California, Los Angeles.

3. Food fights allow a toddler to observe cause and effect. There's nothing more satisfying to a toddler than seeing what his parents will do when he asserts his will.

4. Some kids don't need much food. Your little one isn't a baby anymore. Babies grow at a tremendous pace, says Dr. Stern, but 1- to 3-year-olds grow more slowly. In fact, there are weeks when they don't grow at all. A toddler's appetite will vary according to that particular growth period -- sometimes she'll be hungrier and need more food than at other times. And since a toddler's stomach is small, she doesn't need much food to feel satisfied.

Make Physical Activity A Regular Part Of Your Day

Our food and physical activity choices each day affect our health— how we feel today, tomorrow, and in the future.

MyPyramid.gov offers these tips for increasing physical activity whether you are at home, at work, or at play.

Choose activities that you enjoy and can do regularly. Fitting activity into a daily routine can be easy—such as taking a brisk 10 minute walk to and from the parking lot, bus stop, or subway station. Or, join an exercise class. Keep it interesting by trying something different on alternate days. What’s important is to be active most days of the week and make it part of daily routine. For example, to reach a 30-minute goal for the day, walk the dog for 10 minutes before and after work, and add a 10 minute walk at lunchtime. Or, swim 3 times a week and take a yoga class on the other days. Make sure to do at least 10 minutes of the activity at a time, shorter bursts of activity will not have the same health benefits. To be ready anytime, keep some comfortable clothes and a pair of walking or running shoes in the car and at the office.

Not Getting Enough Sleep? You Might Get A Cold

I have been deficient when it comes to getting enough shut-eye lately. I know. Sleep keeps you more focused during the day and does wonders for your heart and skin. I can tell that my sleep deprivation is why I'm fighting off a lingering cold.

Individuals who get less than seven hours of sleep per night appear about three times as likely to develop respiratory illness following exposure to a cold virus as those who sleep eight hours or more, according to a report in the January 12 issue of Archives of Internal Medicine. The study suggests that people should aim for about eight hours of shut-eye per night.

I notice that when I get less than six hours of sleep a few nights in a row, my body definitely feels heavier and my headache lingers no matter how much coffee I drink throughout the day.

How about you? How do you feel when you're short on sleep? What's the least amount of sleep you can function on?

Hello hip mamas,

Happy New Year to you all! I hope you all had a great holiday.

The SmartShopper™ Electronic Grocery List Organizer is an automated grocery/errand organizer that allows you to add items to your shopping list by simply speaking into the device. Using the easy-to-read LED display, you can edit and customize your SmartShopper and it will automatically sort your items alphabetically. Once you're done and ready to go to the store, the SmartShopper prints your list, organized by categories such as “Fresh Produce”, “Dairy” or “Errands”.

This handy gadget makes my grocery shopping so much easier and faster. I no longer have to sit and write down my grocery list. I just add my grocery items audibly into the gadget and when I'm ready to go do my shopping, my list is printed for me to take to the grocery store. It's really been helpful too as far as buying only the things I need-- the ones that are on my printed list!

The SmartShopper™ Electronic Grocery List Organizer is so awesome that it was also featured on the Rachel Ray Show.

But don't take my word for it.. try it out for yourself! Right now, for the price of $99, you can get it with free ground shipping. Just go to: http://www.smartshopperusa.com/ for more details and to buy one.
