10 Ideas To Improve Your Morning Routine

In as little as 20 minutes or less each morning, you can try your best to live a healthier and even happier life by simply starting a morning routine. You are the only one that can determine if one habit is better for you than another, so give a few a try until you find the one or several that work best for your lifestyle. But getting started is usually the hardest part… why not just start tomorrow?

Live a healthier, happier life by simply starting a morning routine. Check out these 10 ideas to improve your morning routine!

  1. Mindfulness. Take a moment and try to be mindful and stay in the current moment. Our minds tend to want to wake up and start speeding like a freight train. Try to slow it down and take five minutes to just be present. Look around your room and take it all in or find something in particular to look at and admire it. This is also a good time to look out the window and gaze outside for a few moments.

  2. Meditate. This can be a hard practice to begin. But only a few minutes a day can make a huge difference on how you feel the rest overall. Get into comfortable position and either close your eyes or fixate on an object. Simply relax, breathe in and out, and for only several minutes in the morning, try to erase your thoughts. If they start to pop into your mind, recognize them and then move on.

  3. Journal. Writing things down in your journal at the beginning of your day can put things into perspective for you before you even begin the to-do list. Jot down your thoughts and anything that has been on your mind lately and try to just let it go for that moment. Journaling is one of my top favorite ways to practice mindfulness each day and that’s why I wrote why journaling is good for your mind. If you make it a daily practice, especially if it becomes a part of your morning routine, chances are, your day will be a lot less stressful.

  4. Yoga. Even if you haven’t been a fan of trying yoga, now may be the time to give it a whirl. Get a video, a book, or even now there are many apps that can guide you through a beginner’s routine of some basic yoga stretches. This in itself can get you motivated to get moving in the morning and release endorphins as well.

  5. Read. If reading at night puts you right to sleep (this is a good thing!), then read a little bit in the morning before you join the hustle and bustle of the day. Pick up one of the many inspirational books out there that include true stories of hope and bravery or even one with beautiful quotes about life and love. These are sure to inspire your day.

  6. Dance. Not only can a good dance song get you moving and ready to hit the shower even before you reach for your morning coffee, but you can keep the momentum going all day long. Make an upbeat playlist and keep the tunes handy for those moments in the day when you are feeling a little blah or sluggish.

  7. Breakfast. Mornings routines are made for a healthy breakfast and not a to-go mug of coffee in the car for your commute. So, skip the bagel on your lap too and make time for something healthy. If you need to, get up a little earlier and make the time you need for you. A high protein, low carb breakfast is very important to give you the necessary energy for your day.

  8. Prepare. With great gadgets like the programmable coffee maker and apps that help wake you and even can sense when to get you out of bed (try Sleep Cycle), there is no excuse to be more prepared for your morning routine. Pack your lunch, your afterwork gym bag, and even anything you may need for the kids’ after school activities.

  9. Breathe. One of the best ways to start your day is to take a few minutes and practice a breathing exercise. One of the easiest is a “4-7-8” breathing technique. Start by breathing in deeply for a count of 4, then exhale and count to 7, followed by an inhale of 8. Repeat several times and then get on with the rest of your morning. If you do this everyday, it will get easier and add it to your meditation time too.

  10. Set an intention for your day. Create the kind of day you want by setting an intention. Each morning, choose an intention to guide your thoughts and actions for the day. For example, your intention could be: to relax and enjoy simple pleasures; to be more kind to others; to have more fun; or whatever it is that you want to manifest in your life for that day.

It just takes some practice and a little extra time to get a morning routine down pat. If you want to start your day more peaceful, relaxed and focused on what ever it is you’ll be doing, try some or all of these great ideas to do just that.

Meditate, Dance, and Breakfast sound like things I’d love to do. I think it’s important to start your morning off right. These tips are great reminders on how starting the day off right can be really important.

My favorites are read, mindfulness and set an intention for the day. I do love to read and it puts me to sleep at night, but I could read for a few minutes in the morning without getting sleepy again. I like the mindfulness before getting in to the morning routine, and setting an intention sounds like a very positive way to start a new day!

I like Breakfast, Prepare, and Set an Intention for Your day. I normally rush off without food and end up feeling cranky. If I prepare a few things ahead of time like the coffee, lunch, etc I think my day will be a lot smoother. And setting an intention so I don’t feel like at the end of a rushed day I didn’t accomplish anything!

My top 3 are meditation, breakfast, and prepare. My best mornings are when I prepare the night before. Meditation is a wonderful practice, and of course I have to eat breakfast

I am NOT a morning person & they used to be horrible at my house, especially since I am a single mom of 4! I finally figured out that I had to have at least 30 mins to myself before kids got up!
My favorite 3 suggestions are Yoga, dance & set plan for day!!

Journal, read, and breakfast are my favorite tips. I do like to write but I should take the time to journal daily. Reading is such a calming activity that I love. And breakfast is something I really don’t do at all that I know would change my days & give me more energy in the morning & throughout the day.

I read a meditation each morning that makes a large difference in my mood for the day. It also includes several of your points such as reading the meditation then reflecting on its message and also it usually has a message/intention for the day which I make a conscious effort to do throughout the day. It can include being kinder to others, as you stated, or being more thoughtful and considerate.

I think Breathe, Breakfast and Dance would be ones that I could follow. Maybe not dance every morning but depending on my health and energy levels 🙂

Mindfulness, Set an Intention for the day and Breathe are what I need to work on.

I need to be more mindful and aware of what I’m thinking and my surroundings by not letting life just pass me by and setting an intention for the day will help me stay on track to achieving my goals and I need to learn how to properly breathe for better health, relaxation and energy.

My favorite tips are keeping a journal as it helps me not to lose myself. Dancing lifts my spirits and puts me in a good mood. Breakfast is so very important to me and makes me feel strong enough to get through the day. I love to program my coffee maker so that I smell the brew when I wake up:)

I choose breakfast, prepare and breathe. I know I need fuel in the am I am constantly trying to practice taking deep breaths due to extreme anxiety. With the anxiety I also hv found if I prepare mentally and physically for each new day it seems to keep me focused on that mire than fear

Read, Breathe, and Dance works best for me. Reading is my favorite thing. Who isn’t happy when they’re dancing and breathing gives you a moment to get yourself ready for the day.

I really like Prepare, Set an intention for the day, and am working on Breakfast. I still have a hard time actually eating anything, but it has made a HUGE difference to have a protein shake before I even have a cup of coffee. I got a programmable coffee maker for Christmas and it is wonderful to wake to the smell of a fresh brew. So easy to add that little step to packing lunches and such before bed. My favorite, though, is setting an intention for the day. I include our three year old in that. We discuss what it is, how it will fit with our plans for the day, and we help keep each other on point as we go along.

    04/13/2017 / 3:57 am

My favorites are mindfulness, breakfast, and set an intention for the day. I already try to include mindfulness in my morning routine by waking up and be thankful for my life and my kids. It gives me more pep in my step and to get out of bed with a smile. I also like Breakfast because it’s something I need to focus on more, I tend to just drink coffee and then am dragging mid day. Set and intention for the day is great because it will keep me focused on what I want to accomplish and keep negative thoughts away.

  19. 04/13/2017 / 1:56 am

My top three are breathe, journaling, and breakfast! Breathing because it can help to get me centered for the day. Journaling for getting my thoughts in order. And breakfast for nourishing my body.

When I get up in the morning, I try to eat something healthy and light right away. A nice cup of Timmies coffee and some oatmeal with berries and yogurt really starts me off on the right foot.

I like the meditate , journal and breathe tips. I choose mediate because it would help me relax. I like to journal my thoughts and it is great stress relief. I also picked breathe because it does make me less stressed.

I’m a fan of the breathe, breakfast, set an intention for the day. The breathing 4-7-8 Is a great way to focus my myself on the day ahead. Great way to wind down at night too. Breakfast is so very important to get your body going. I’m a teacher so setting my intention for the day gets my heart in the right place.

Thank you so much for sharing this post. I don’t think some people realize how important mornings are! I love the idea of meditation in the morning , it really gets your mind set in the right direction. I currently do yoga first thing when I wake up and it has made a huge difference in my energy for the day. I also love breakfast. It’s so important to get a nutritional breakfast to start your day.

I would definitely choose yoga, prepare, and breakfast! I have always loved doing yoga, it makes me feel amazing! I love preparing for the next day the night before, especially as a mom of three. And of course I believe breakfast is the best meal of the day, as I definitely drag without it. 🙂

I am a big fan of food so I never skip breakfast. it helps me get through the day. I might also try breathe since I need to calm down more often. I usually do yoga with a class, I don’t know about doing it on my own in the morning, unless you count a few stretches.

  29. Robin Abrams
    04/11/2017 / 11:07 am

Meditate would be my first because my mind is always going. I need to slow down.
Breakfast would be number 2. I usually have to skip breakfast because I am always running late.
Prepare would be number 3. This way maybe I would have more time and not run late.

Mindfulness is my fave because being in the moment is a major goal of mine right now.Meditation is second because I find that it helps me focus on the day and all I have to do.Yoga is third because it relaxes me and sets me off right for the day.Great for end of day too!

My favorites would be Journal, Prepare and Breathe!!! I want to thank you so much. I have anxiety, so I actually wrote these down in my notes, in my phone. I am loving this list! I am going to start first thing tomorrow morning. Seriously, thank you from the bottom of my heart! I have tried many things. Your hard work is appreciated! Thank you and God bless!

I love dancing. I do it almost every day, and sweat my booty off. I also do yoga infrequently. I should be more mindful of eating breakfast. I usually skip it in lieu of coffee.

My top 3 ideas from you suggestions are: dance, eat breakfast and set an intention for your day. I chose dance because it sounds like it would be fun to do. I chose eating breakfast because I know that’s something I should already be doing. And I chose set an intention for your day because it sounds like something that would keep me motivated throughout the day.

I need to do the Breathe, meditation and yoga. They sound like something I could and would do daily.

  42. 04/10/2017 / 1:03 am

#3 Journal- writing something right after I get up could be a dream or just something that needs to be done- wonderful I need a pretty journal.

#9 Breathe- to start the day by centering myself helps with stress.

#10 set an intention for your day- this is great way to accomplish something specific, even if it is just relaxing.

  43. Sarah L
    04/10/2017 / 12:30 am

I like the Mindfulness. I like to look out the window and see what’s happening. I do eat a healthy breakfast just about all mornings. One of mine is to get as much ready the night before.

  44. Samantha Scarlett

Breakfast, news (on my smartphone, not on journal!) and Set An Intention for the day!

  45. Judy Cox
    04/09/2017 / 7:58 pm

Since retiring I don’t have to do this every single day, but to get myself together I think number one for me would be to BREATHE. I have always thought a BREAKFAST helps me maintain early. After all that I would say MINDFULNESS helps me focus and decide what I will do that day, if I have no definite plans.

  46. Mandala
    04/09/2017 / 7:46 pm

Meditate, set an intention for your day and breakfast are my top 3. Having a clear mind and a good breakfast helps me focus on my day. It also increases my ability to deal with the daily stress of work.

Oh my favorite three are Breathe, Read, and Set An Intention for the day! Reading is so inspirational for me and always makes me feel good! I think the set an intention is important for you to know what has to be done..and not get you too stressed out. Its easier for me to plan my day! And…when things are tough….Breathe!

Breakfast, prepare and intention. I have a VERY ACTIVE 15 month old that sleeps with me so there isn’t a lot of mindful gazing out the window or blissful yoga time right out of the gate. Life is easier when you picked up and set out clothing for the next day.

The top three for me are mindfulness, read, and breathe. These make most for my mindset right now. Years ago my answer would have been little different as living and time has made its mark on me.

    04/09/2017 / 5:35 am

MY favorite are journal, breakfast, and breathe. These are my favorite because I agree that journaling is good for your mind. I’ve always loved to write because it’s always been helpful for me. A healthy breakfast is a must for improving your morning routine, because it energizes you and gets you ready for the day. And food is just so delicious, I love to eat! And sometimes we just forget to breathe so I think it’s great to spend a few minutes a day doing breathing exercises. I notice that it helps me to relax.

Set an intention for your day, Breakfast and Breathe. I LOVE these ideas. Thanks for the list,I need to remind myself of these daily!! I do love my breakfast though, and like to plan things out for the day.

  55. Nena Sinclair
    04/08/2017 / 11:07 pm

My three would be mindfulness, breakfast and to set an intention for my day. I am not a person who can wake up quickly, so mindfulness is a must in order to get myself focused. Breakfast is a must for me, to nourish my body and get moving, plus I’m diabetic. And setting a goal for the day is a great way to get my brain in gear.

  56. Kelly Kimmell
    04/08/2017 / 10:04 pm

My three favorite from the list are meditate, breathe and breakfast. I believe we need to try to slow down & take the time for what is really important.

  57. Annmarie W.
    04/08/2017 / 8:40 pm

I like Dance, Breathe & Set an Intention for your day. I like these 3 because they help to take care of the physical, the spiritual/mental & the logical. Those work for me. I sometimes find myself putting too much attention on the ‘what needs to be done’ more than the ‘taking care of myself’ aspects of starting the day.

    04/08/2017 / 5:56 pm

Read, Dance, and Breakfast are my top favorite 3 of the 10 ideas. I love to read and it’s a great way to slowly begin your day. Once I am fully awake – I like to burn calories and dancing is a great way to do that and have fun doing it. Last breakfast, because I am my most hungry in the morning and if I eat a good breakfast I will have energy and feel great until lunch time. 🙂

These are all great suggestions! I’ve started to add some of these already, like the breathing. My favorite is yoga, journal and prepare! I chose those because I need to do more yoga: I’ve only recently gotten back to it and am not doing it very often, so I plan to increase that. Preparation is so important for me to start because I get so frazzled trying to get going when things are set out or made ready the night before. And Journalling because – while I do write things down, its more like a medical chart to track how certain vitamins and supplements are effecting my mood and physical health. I want to get myself to talk more about things that I have been avoiding for much of my life. This way I can see the “why” and then figure out the “how” of making things better. I also love Mindfulness and it can hard to stay mindful for me, but your tip on orienting with objects around the room or outside the window really does help get you back to .. you, and not on the many things that need to be done that day. Excellent post!

Breathe, meditate (pray), breakfast should be my 3 things every morning but unfortunately I just jump up, late, and go nonstop. I know if I did these 3 things my blood pressure would be so much better.

I have already adopted the behaviors of Mindfulness & Meditation to start my mornings. I look forward to these moments alone to slowly start my day with intention. And then I’m ready to dance around my kitchen (and sing!) while I feed my dogs. They love it!

  62. Karen

I try to do a lot of things the night before. I have to get my husband’s lunch ready and do that before going to bed. I also get the coffee pot ready to have fresh brewed coffee in the morning. I try to do some stretching exercises after a cup of coffee in the early morning. I am afraid there isn’t much time for all the other things that you listed in your article.

Mindfulness, breakfast and prepare. Being a single dad raising 5 kids, I tell them the importance of eating a healthy breakfast to start their day. Being prepared is key and I am not always that way but try for the most part.

I like the mindfulness tip because I like to look out the window and see the sun shining! That sets the tone for the day! I also lIke to read and reading inspirational stories always makes me feel better! I also want to try yoga because I’ve heard lots of good things about it!

Mindfulness, meditate, and set an intention. I appreciate getting centered first thing and having a set idea of what I need to accomplish for the day. It really helps to accomplish your goals when you feel confident and prepared.

Breakfast is so important! It gives you the energy and nutritious jump start to your datum. I heard a lot of great things about meditation. I have never tried it. Being able to channel your feelings, appeals! I have journelled, and quite a lot! I just got out of an abusive relationship, and it was stressed to me, and it actually does work!

My top three are yoga, journaling and and dance. I’m choosing these ones because yoga and journaling are something that I have been wanting to do for years and yet have never gotten around to it because admittedly I procrastinate a lot. I’ve also never tried either in the morning, I thought of them more as unwinding in the evening. I like the idea of journaling in the a.m. and I do know yoga is an excellent morning habit. I love dance because I don’t do it. I think that putting on your favorite music and dancing during your morning routine is not just fun but sets your tone for the entire day. Thank you for all of the great tips.

My choices are breakfast, dance and Set an intention. Most mornings I am in a rush to get the kids ready and take them to school. I also take the neighbors kids to school so I need to be ready on time since I am responsible for them as well. We always have breakfast and listen to music in the morning. I set an intention or what I want to accomplish that day, really what things NEED to be done like shopping for dinner, any sports, or pick up meds.

I like prepare, mindfulness, and dance. Ive always felt like if i organized thing the night before then my morning goes so much smoother. I also love to workout in the mornings. My day feels so much more productive afterwards. i need to work more on the mindfulness. I can sometimes get overwhelmed with everything that needs to get done or if something happened the day before.

My choices are dance, breakfast and prepare. I always have music on so I tend to dance when I’m doing other stuff like cleaning. I always have a healthy breakfast so I have energy. I always prepare the night before like packing lunches and setting out my clothes for the morning.

I think that Setting an an intention for the day, preparing & Journaling would be the most helpful for me becaue I am a planner and writing things down always help me get things down so I always have a to-do list. I love the idea of preparing anything ahead of time too because it always helps me break things down.

    Read. Dance. Breakfast.

I am a big reader and I can’t live without reading books! Dancing helps me still feel young! Breakfast is the most important meal of the day!

I really like your ideas and I do follow some of them already. I like to lay in bed for a few minutes and prepare what I am going to do for the day. Out of my list, I choose things that I definitely want to get done. Those things have to be possible and probably so I do not end up disappointed at the end of the day. I also always eat breakfast, even if it is only a couple of pieces of toast and a glass of orange juice. If I want my body to perform, I have to give it some fuel. Thanks for the great giveaway opportunity.

I would begin with breathing, to take in fresh air and oxygenate my lungs after a night’s sleep. I would then meditate, or create a sense of mindfulness, followed by a plan of action for the day.

  78. 04/07/2017 / 3:34 am

Great info as I am NOT a morning person. I said I would actually meditate more but the dancing should be fun to get me more in the morning mood!

I would have to go with breakfast, it really is the MOST important meal of the day. It helps with your metabolism. Yoga would have to be next. I have just started getting into yoga and it helps with other things on your list…like breathing and meditation. I would say my third is read. I love, Love, LOVE inspirational quotes, short stories, etc.

Breakfast, prepare and read. Breakfast, because it is the most important meal of the day and brain food! Prepare, because it helps not feeling rushed in the mornings. There is nothing I hate worse than feeling rushed, so I like having things prepared the night before. And read…I love to read, so I can do this any time of day! lol

Prepare, Set an intention and breathe. By preparing, it seems like the day starts out right. Setting an intention and thinking positively is also a great way to start the day. Taking a few moments to start the day to relax and breathe also helps with focusing and calming down the hectic start of a day.

My top three would be mindfulness, setting an intention and breakfast. I m super bad at skipping break fast, I am working on this one, and not having a cup of coffee. I think mindfulness and setting intentions are great. I am often in so much hurry I dont have time to just get my thoughts and self together.. Practicing any or all of these things would be very beneficial.

My top 3 favorite ways to improve your morning are prepare, read and set an intention for your day. My mornings are usually super crazy so being able to prepare things the night would be a huge benefit. I think reading would be a good idea because starting your day with a word of inspiration would make you feel ready to take on anything. Lastly I think setting an intention for the day helps you get focus and direction which can be a huge motivation.

I love the idea of setting intention for each day so I have direction and not just let it flow and feel like I’ve “wasted” a day! I love dancing each morning~I dance to “Happy” by Pharrel! Makes me so happy and it’s quite a long song. I really want to start meditating to quiet my mind.

My three favorite tips are breakfast, journal, and breathe. Breakfast is super important and I think sitting down and having a meal and coffee is the perfect way to start my morning. Journaling is something I like to do already, I write down my dreams and I love writing to do lists and stuff like that to make my day easier. And breathing always helps my anxiety, so I like to do that.

The first of my three would be mindfulness, sometimes we need to slow down and think about things and I need to remember that instead of rushing around The second is read I enjoy reading at night but have not thought to do it in the morning. My third is breakfast, I use to be really bad and never eat breakfast but now I try to make time for it.

  104. 04/06/2017 / 2:39 am

Every morning, I try to drink a glass of water before my breakfast. That is, if I remember. I love your suggestions but I especially love the one about meditation. What a great idea to start off the day!

Great post! My top three favorite ideas for improving my morning are (in no particular order) Mindfulness, Breathe, and Dance. I feel that these three most closely align with my background, personal interests, and needs at this time. My education, training, and career experience are centered on Clinical Psychology, and MINDFULNESS has been a core concept throughout. It grew to become quite the hot topic a handful of years ago, esp. when working with anxiety disorders. I think that it would be helpful for me WRT focus and task mastery. BREATHE is related… I think that we can simply “forget” about our breathing– and all of the other things that are bodies are doing, to keep us moving throughout the day! …Which leads me to DANCE. I take dance classes when I can, and I love to dance to music on the radio. I’ve found that it helps me to feel energized, and really present and grounded as well. Dance helps me to appreciate my body, and to help me get going for the day.

Great ideas! I like breakfast, journal and breathe as they are all a great way to start. I have been reading about the importance of gratitude and a journal would be a great place to list things you are grateful for that day.

  107. 04/06/2017 / 1:01 am

I’m all about dance, breakfast and prepare. I’m a total dancer, it gets me motivated and gets my juice flowing. I even dance when I clean. Breakfast is a challenge and I have to remind myself to do it. I bought some simple grab and go so I make sure to eat. I love to be able to prepare as much as possible and having my coffee set and ready for me would be wonderful! I’ll be working on that!

  108. 04/06/2017 / 12:59 am

I always start my day out by stretching. I have a bad back and after a long sleep, I need it. Then, I head into the kitchen and drink a full glass of water and take my overnight oats out of the fridge. I’m always sad when I run out of them/forget to make them the night before. Thanks for giving.

  109. 04/06/2017 / 12:52 am

My favorites from the list are breakfast, yoga and journal. Breakfast is very important since its your first meal of the day and the other activities will help you relax in the morning.

Journal, read, breakfast. I chose these because I love to journal and it feels good to get my feelings down on paper. I also love to read the journals, sometimes years later. Read because reading relaxes me. I have been a reader for as long as I can remember and it makes for a better me. Breakfast because I’m one of those who tends to skip breakfast and I know it’s not good for me. Lately I have been trying to do better.
